It is the main settlement and administrative centre of the Borough of Macclesfield, and is considered to be one of the 30 wealthiest towns in Britain.
Macclesfield is located on the edge of the Peak District, on the River Bollin and the Macclesfield Canal.
Macclesfield, known as Hamestan in the Domesday Book, was granted a borough charter by the Lord Edward, the future King Edward I, in 1261.

Originally the trade of Macclesfield was principally in twist and silk buttons, hut this has developed into the manufacture of all kinds of silk~ Besides this staple trade, there are various textile manufactures and extensive breweries; while stone and slate quarries, as well as coal-mines, are worked in the neighborhood.
Previous to the Conquest, Macclesfield (Maksfeld, Mackerfeld, Macclesfeld, Meulefeld, Maxfield) was held by Edwin, earl of Mercia, and at the time of the Domesday Survey it formed a part of the lands of the earl of Chester.
In 1880 it was disfranchised for bribery, and in 1885 the borough was merged in the county division of Macclesfield.

Macclesfield borough council is to start using an integrated recycling scheme in an attempt to achieve a recycling rate of over 35%.
Macclesfield has also been able to announce that participation surveys have shown that 60 to 70% of the houses in the area used for the trial have a recycling receptacle on collection day.
Macclesfield currently recycles 14% of its waste and is has been set a government target of 24% for 2005/06.

Macclesfield is situated in the east of the county of Cheshire, South of the City of Manchester (18 Miles approx) and North of the City of Stoke on Trent (22 Miles approx).
Well, Macclesfield is also known as the Silk town because of Macclesfields link to the Silk trade from China and several of the Mill buildings used in the industrial revolution still remain in the town.
Macclesfield is also listed in the doomsday survey of 1086 but its main prosperity developed during the 18th to 19th century with its excellence in producing silk, however this is what also proved the towns demise during the late 19th century with its total dependance on its silk industry.

Macclesfield was made a free borough as early as 1200 by Lord Randle.
Macclesfield, now called the "Old Church." While Edward was Prince of Wales, he granted the first charter, dated May 20th., 1261, making Macclesfield a free borough.
This was later confirmed by Edward III in 1334, by Richard II, Edward IV, Queen Elizabeth in 1564 and 1595 and by Charles II in 1678.

The permission for the development of Lyme Green was conditional on a 106 Agreement whereby the developer, Orbit, would contribute to the cost of bridging the railway line and would grant the Council an easement across its land to enable the Council to connect the SMDA site to London Road.
The brief was quite specific as to the types of development - including social housing, retail, employment; it specified as a pre-requisite for development the creation of a link to London Road and the re-location of playing fields from SMDA to new off-site location.
