Macdonald was educated in the area's finest schools, and he established his own law practice in Kingston at the age of 19.
Macdonald oversaw many changes in the 1850s: the state assumed responsibility for social welfare, standards were set for government institutions and places were constructed for the poor who had no means of support.
Macdonald was chosen to be its first Prime Minister and was proclaimed Knight Commander of the Bath, bestowing him the title of "Sir." Macdonald easily won the election in the summer of 1867.

Macdonald promised a transcontinental railway connection to persuade the province to join, which his opponents decried as a highly unrealistic and expensive promise.
Macdonald was re-elected in 1878 on the strength of the National Policy, a plan to promote trade within the country by protecting it from the industries of other nations and renewing the effort to complete the previously promised Canadian Pacific Railway, which was accomplished in 1885.
Macdonald and his son, Hugh John Macdonald briefly sat together in the Canadian House of Commons prior to the elder Macdonald's death in 1891.

Macdonald was elected to the House of Commons in the 1891 federal election, representing Winnipeg City for the Conservative Party.
Macdonald narrowly defeated incumbent Liberal John D. Cameron in Winnipeg South, and was sworn in as Premier on January 10, 1900.
Macdonald succeeded in passing a prohibition bill (known as the "Macdonald Act"), but was again prevailed upon to run for the federal Conservatives in the 1900 federal election.

 Manitoba Pageant: Macdonald House - Exercise in Restoration
Macdonald House, known as Dalnavert in its heyday, was built for Sir Hugh John Macdonald in 1895.
Since Manitoba limestone would be historically correct, it was chosen for the replacement of some 200 pieces, cut to specifications.
The Manitoba Historical Society hopes to open Macdonald House in 1974, to coincide with the Centennial celebrations of the City of Winnipeg.

Briefly Premier of Manitoba during 1900, his long and colourful career included service as soldier, Member of Parliament, Member of the Legislative Assembly, and police magistrate for the City of Winnipeg.
Threatened with demolition in 1970, Dalnavert was saved by the Manitoba Historical Society and by 1974 was restored to its former elegance.

 Nurse practitioners blame province for job shortage
But Jane MacDonald, the co-chair of the Nurse Practitioner Association of Manitoba, warned Wednesday that the NDP government under Premier Gary Doer has not funded enough jobs for nurse practitioners.
As well, two pilot projects involving nurse practitioners are underway or in the works: one at the Manitoba Clinic in Winnipeg to improve services for children and another in emergency services at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach.
A spokesman for the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba pointed out that it has only been a year since nurse practitioners were able to work in the province, even though the University of Manitoba has been graduating them since 2000.

It was a great finish to what he described as one of the best winters in Central Manitoba.
An abundance of snow and a lack of really windy days had left all the open areas very level, which meant getting to the trail was much easier and faster as there were no moguls to contend with.
