Alexander born in 1849 was Duke of Fife and Earl of Macduff and became Lord Lieutenant of the county of London.
Macduff fled to the court of Siward, Earl of Northumbria, where he represented to Macbeth’s cousins, sons of the late Duncan, King of Scots, that the time was ripe for them to secure possession of their father’s throne.

Macduff, still innocent of the punishment exacted from his family, is already in England with Malcolm, who has the support of the English monarchy in raising an army to march against Macbeth; Macduff's allegiance to Malcolm intensifies when Rosse arrives to tell him the fate of his family.
Macduff insists, and attacks, and Macbeth tells him of the witches' prophecy that he cannot die at the hands of "one of woman born." Macduff reveals that he was not born naturally, but delivered prematurely through Caesarean section.

 History of the MacDuff/Duff Clan
One of his descendants, Gillemichael MacDuff, the 3rd Earl of Fife, had a grandson Michael who was the source of the Wemyss family of MacDuff, while another descendant may have been the ancestor of the Duffs of Banffshire.
The royal ancestry is acknowledged by the use of the lion rampant in the MacDuff crest.
Duncan MacDuff, who died in 1154 was made a hereditary earl by King David I and the Macduffs were given the honour of crowning the king.
