Mach number - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mach number (Ma) (pronounced as "mack" in International English or "mock" in the American English) is defined as a ratio of speed to the speed of sound in the medium in case.
The Mach number is commonly used both with objects travelling at high speed in a fluid, and with high-speed fluid flows inside channels such as nozzles, diffusers or wind tunnels.
At standard sea level conditions, Mach 1 is 1,225 km/h (765.6 MPH) in the atmosphere.

Ernst Mach - Iridis Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Mach returned to the University of Vienna as professor of inductive philosophy in 1895, but he suffered a stroke two years later and retired from active research in 1901, when he was appointed to the Austrian parliament.
Mach's paper on this subject was published in 1877 and correctly describes the sound effects observed during the supersonic motion of a projectile.
Mach deduced and experimentally confirmed the existence of a shock wave which has the form of a cone with the projectile at the apex.

Mach's interests had already begun to turn to the psychology and physiology of sensation, although he continued to identify himself as a physicist and to conduct physical research throughout his career.
Mach also proposed the physical principle, known as Mach's principle, that inertia (the tendency of a body at rest to remain at rest and of a body in motion to continue in motion in the same direction) results from a relationship of that object with all the rest of the matter in the universe.
Mach's inertial theories also were cited by Einstein as one of the inspirations for his theories of relativity.

Mach and Ehrenfels: Foundations of Gestalt Theory
Mach's epistemology and ontology grew out of his investigations, both systematic and historical, in physics and psychology, and they contributed in turn to the further development of his own thinking in these areas and to the work of those, such as Einstein and Ehrenfels, whom he influenced.
Mach is widely acknowledged as having been the first thinker to combine philosophical clarification, history of science and substantive scientific research in ways that are recognisable as philosophy of science as this is nowadays understood.
Mach's critics and interpreters have concentrated in their writings much rather on the Elemente themselves, and the literature abounds with refutations of the 'phenomenalism' or 'neutral monism' which Mach is held to have propounded.

Mach was a thorough-going positivist and took the view, which most scientists now share, that no statement is admissible in natural science unless it is empirically verifiable....
Mach was the first person to realize that if matter traveling through the air moved faster than the speed of sound it drastically altered the quality of the space in which it moved.
Mach gave his name to the Mach Number, which expresses the speed of matter relative to the speed of sound at a certain temperature.

Aerospaceweb.org | Ask Us - Speed of Sound, Mach Number & Sound Barrier
The Mach number (M) is simply the ratio of the vehicle's velocity (V) divided by the speed of sound at that altitude (a).
For example, an aircraft flying at Mach 0.8 is traveling at 80% of the speed of sound while a missile cruising at Mach 3 is traveling at three times the speed of sound.
Therefore, if you know the value of Mach 1 in miles per hour, feet per second, kilometers per hour, or any other unit of measurement at the altitude in question, you merely have to multiply that value by the desired Mach number to determine the speed in that particular unit.

As a microkernel, GNU Mach doesn't implement a lot of the features commonly found in an operating system, but only the bare minimum that is required to implement a full operating system on top of it.

 Mach Number
The ratio of the speed of the aircraft to the speed of sound in the gas determines the magnitude of many of the compressibility effects.
As the speed of the object approaches the speed of sound, the flight Mach number is nearly equal to one, M = 1, and the flow is said to be transonic.
The trigonometric sine of the cone angle b is equal to the inverse of the Mach number M and the angle is therefore called the Mach angle.

Mach's principle on Encyclopedia.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
(mäks) [for E. Mach ], assertion that the inertial effects of mass are not innate in a body, but arise from its relation to the totality of all other masses, i.e., to the universe as a whole.
Thus, the inertial forces experienced by a body in accelerated motion have the same physical origin as the gravitational forces it experiences near mass concentrations, namely the mass-energy field described by the general theory of relativity.
According to Mach's principle, a body experiences no inertial forces when it is at rest or in uniform motion with respect to the center of mass of the entire universe.
