Machairodonts were not even in the same subfamily as tigers, there is no evidence that they had tiger-like coat patterns, and this broad group of animals certainly did not all live or hunt in the same manner as the modern tiger.
DNA analysis published in 2005 confirmed and clarified cladistic analysis in showing that the Machairodontinae diverged early from the ancestors of modern cats and are not closely related to any living feline species.
It is commonly thought that saber-toothed cats lived only in cold areas caused by an ice age.

 Lioncrusher's Domain - Machairodontinae (Sabre-Toothed Cats)
Sabre-toothed cats are probably one of the most easily-recognized and well known prehistoric creatures.
Unlike the similar Nimravidae, the sabre-toothed cats are true cats, grouped together in three tribes in the subfamily Machairodontinae.
The common ancestor between the sabre-toothed cats and the modern cats was Pseudaelurus, which split into two lineages around 18-20 mya.

PREHISTORIC CATS AND PREHISTORIC CAT-LIKE CREATURES
Pseudaelurus lorteti was about the size of a large lynx while P validus was the size of a large lynx or small puma.
Three other species of early cat are described as Pratifelis, Vishnufelis and Sivaelurus (S chinjienis).Pseudaelurus went on to split into two major groups: the Machairodontinae (true sabre-tooths) and Schizailurus (the ancestor of the modern day Felidae group).
The Machairodontinae are true cats and their fossils have been found in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

The extinct subfamily Machairodontinae, including the "saber-toothed cats" such as the well known Smilodon, were also true felines, in contrast to similar animals such as Thylacosmilus or Nimravidae.
There are 37 known species of felines in the world today which have all descended from a common ancestor of c.
This group, better known as the sabertooth cats, became extinct in the Late Pleistocene era.

Its jaws could open at an angle of over 60 degrees.
Smilodons are related to the Machairodontinae family of felines.
The term "saber toothed tigers" is quite misleading, because there is no evidence that Smilodons or any other Machairodonts were related to tigers at all.

Nimravids evolved on a separate lineage from the cats; the last common ancestor between them was the miacids.

Albeit, placing said manipulated/refabricated DNA into an oocyte (an egg) would probably follow similar techniques to those used in cloning.
That said, even though lions are from a completely different subfamily of the Felidae (subfamily Felinae, as opposed to subfamily Machairodontinae), with no extant machairodont species around, I can certainly see where any gaps in a DNA sequence for a sabertooth would be filled in with genes from lions and/or tigers.
