 Touring the island of Madeira: Machico
From the historic point of view this is probably the most interesting town on the island as Machico was the landing point of the discoverers of Madeira.
Apart from the parochial church there is the small chapel of São Roque on the quay, built in the 16th century, with an interesting exhibition of blue and white tiles telling about the saint’s life.
The fishing harbours are located in Machico and Caniçal, where the fishing fleet’s catch consists mainly of tuna and ‘gaiado’ (regional fish to be dried).

I went to the 'International Diving Centers of Madeira', Dive Centre 'Baleia' ('whale') in Machico, which is on the south east coast of Madeira.
Machico is twenty-five minutes from Funchal, the capital, by taxi or fifty minutes by bus.
There is a very good public transport bus system including a 'white knuckle' ride on the Rapido over the mountain or a high speed dash in Mercedes taxis along the new expressway that follows the coast.

Machico is a great spot from which to explore the island and the Santo da Serra Golf course is only a few minutes away by car.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Madeira
Keeping to the east bank of the "Riba Machico" (another small stream) follow the road away from the town centre, along the coast, to a pebble beach and harbour area where there is ample parking.
Approx 44kms east of Funchal and beyond Machico and Canical from where a small road runs to a car parking area near the point.
The scenery is spectacular but the birding is hardly worth the effort, although we did see our second highest daily total of 18 species on 17th when we ventured north, as a result of returning via Machico where we added at least 8 to our total.

On the evidence of a portulano dated 1351, preserved at Florence, Italy, it would appear that Madeira had been discovered long previous to that date by Portuguese vessels under Genoese captains.

Sunday 1 September.  After brief visits to the port of Funchal, Machico “estuary”, Canical, Ponta de Sao Lourenço and Faial (northwest coast), we drove the long and winding road along the north coast.
The breeding population of the Madeira archipelago is estimated at over 1300 pairs (Snow and Perrins 1998).
On 3 September we relocated this bird, feeding among the rocks in the mouth of the Ribeiro Machico.
