Which information is contained on a machine readable passport? (Anders Jacobsen's blog)
In its current form, machine readable passports generally have two lines of text that can be read using Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
One reader asks a question more people should ask themselves as machine readable passports are rapidly becoming the standard identification documents for international travel, and as remotely readable biometric information is becoming the standard for entry to the US very soon: what information is contained within machine readable passports?

 The Machine Readable Web
The key will be for content providers to adopt a richer set of machine readable formats like they have started to do for RSS and keeping it as simple as possible so a wide variety of software developers can provide tools for the end users.
So a machine readable Web is starting to become a reality with RSS and Web services and may progress even further with something like machine-to-machine or the semantic Web.
The content providers need to have a relatively easy way to provide the machine readable content and it has to fit in with their mission.

Jackson Lewis - Extension of Deadline for Machine Readable Passports for Visa Waiver Visitors
Notwithstanding this extension, visitors from Belgium will continue to be required to have machine readable passports or to obtain visas from a U.S. embassy or consulate prior to traveling to the United States because of concerns about the security of Belgian passports.
In order to obtain an extension, a Visa Waiver country will need to outline its plans for issuing machine readable passports, describe the measures it has taken to prevent misuse of its non-machine readable passports, and commit to the timely sharing with the United States of information on lost and stolen passports.
In July 2003, the U.S. Department of State had announced that all visitors from the 27 Visa Waiver countries would have to present machine readable passports as of October 1, 2003 or to obtain a visa from a U.S. embassy or consulate before coming to the United States.

DOS: Few Countries Can Meet Machine Readable Passport Deadline
According to a Department of Homeland Security fact sheet, by October 26, 2004, countries participating in the VWP are mandated by the USA Patriot Act to certify that they have programs to issue their nationals machine readable passports that incorporate biometric identifiers that comply with standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
"While Secretary of State Colin Powell had the authority to extend the machine readable requirement [of October 1, 2003], he does not have the authority to extend beyond October 26 [2004] the biometric or machine readable requirements," said Patt.
The U.S. statute gave the decision on which biometric would be required to ICAO, which decided in May 2003 on facial recognition as the globally interoperable biometric for machine-assisted identity confirmation, leaving little time for countries to develop a capacity to issue the new machine readable passports, said Harty.

RFC 582 (rfc582) - Comments on RFC 580: Machine readable protocols
Network Working Group R. Clements Request for Comments: 582 BBN-TENEX NIC: 19962 5 November 1973 Comments on RFC 580 - Machine Readable Protocols I fully support the requirement for machine-readable protocol documents.
Those persons should be able to prepare the documents in the home machine (or wherever) in languages with which they are familiar.
Perhaps the program which receives mail for the journal will do the trick; if so it needs further documentation beyond the mail-oriented RFC 543, and its existence and usage need to be publicised.

Data consultation services can be offered when there is machine- readable information on campus, whether it is acquired by the library or by another agency on campus.
Although this may not seem to be an immediate prospect, libraries that are government depositories are already having to decide whether or not to accept machine- readable depository items.
Similarly, faculty and students are quite likely today to have easy access to personal computers or powerful workstation-class machines and to feel more comfortable with information in electronic form.

 Machine-readable Tables

Machine readable tables provide two important benefits to the AAS Journals.
In addition, each file includes a meta-data header which documents the format and some of the scientific content of the table including units and a short description of each column.
