machismo:friend or foe?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Machismo is an issue that, rather, applies to survival in the Hispanic world, and that I treat in all my language, culture and civilization classes.
Machismo then, for a Mexican is not only a system that allows him to maintain his honor and that of his family, but it is also a code of survival.
This has created a duality in the Mexican mythical view of woman: she is either a saint, the representation of the family's honor, the respected wife and mother, or she is a "fallen woman," irredemable in the eyes of society.

 Challenging Machismo
However, machismo could be described as a cult of the male; a heady mixture of paternalism, aggression, systematic subordination of women, fetishism of their bodies, and idolisation of their reproductive and nurturing capacities, coupled to a rejection of homosexuality.
Machismo is not just present in the behaviour of individual men: it is manifested in political and social institutions and is deeply ingrained in the culture (Monzón 1988).
Machismo gives rise to powerful images which legitimate women's subordination, and establish a value system which is concerned with regulating not so much relationships between men and women, but relationships between men, where women are conceived of as a form of currency.

 Machismo
Machismo conjures up images of strength, silence, stoicism and self-reliance, the lone man (must it always be a man?) on a constant quest to master all that is around them.
Central to the idea of machismo is the conceit of what is right, what is proper: ‘This is not how a man behaves’, and what is brought into question is the virility of the hero character.
In this show five artists explore this gendered conceit of machismo and in doing so pit its inherent destructive urges, the desire to smash up the things that one doesn’t understand, against its other trait, the willing-up of something out of nothing through sheer force of will.

The term machismo is normally not colloquially used in Spanish other than in a self-referential way, the term itself being the topic.
This is because the word is extraneous to the traditional lexical repertoire Spanish-speakers have historically relied on when discussing concepts relating to masculinity and femininity.
