Silvana (Manuela Martelli), a neighbour of Machuca's, represents a much keener political consciousness--although friends with Infante, she can barely contain her rage towards him when she discovers that one of the women she has had a confrontation with at a nationalist demonstrations is, in fact, his mother.
Machuca's neighbourhood is affected in a way that Infante would not even be aware of but for the friendship between the boys, since the newspapers declare that the country is in a state of normalcy.
As Infante leaves Machuca's neighbourhood on his bicycle, the screen of smoke towards which he rides is fluid and blurry, as if seen through his eyes.

Set against the background of the political instability that led to the crisis, Andrés Woods' Machuca is the moving story of the friendship between two boys from different sides of the social spectrum.
Gonzalo is shy and inexpressive and is often bullied at school.
Although Machuca may ultimately have more of an impact for Chileans who experienced the coup directly, its theme of young people caught in the swirl of events beyond their understanding resonates far beyond the details of this single tragic moment in history.

'Machuca' - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
There is no separating the personal from the political in "Machuca." This film's determination to tell a story of profound societal dislocation in intensely human terms favors neither part of the equation.
"Machuca" opens not with its namesake but with a boy named Gonzalo Infante (Matías Quer) carefully buttoning his white shirt, tucking it into his pants and putting on his tie, all in preparation for a day at St. Patrick's English School, one of Santiago's top educational establishments.
His older sister is boy crazy, his father is disengaged, and though his mother (a vibrant Aline Küppenheim) is loving, her regular liaison with an older man is the focus of her attention.

Machuca (2004) is a Chilean film written and directed by Andrés Wood.

A sensitive study in class warfare, social bigotry and political awareness, "Machuca" thoughtfully examines the doomed relationship between two eleven-year-old boys in Chile and the families from which they come.
The film directed by Andres Wood is set in Santiago del Chile in 1973 just prior to the overthrown of the Socialist government of President Salvador Allende by right-wing forces headed by General Augusto Pinochet.
