  Maciejowski Bible
Of French origin, the Maciejowski Bible was commissioned by King Louis IX (Saint Louis) of France (1214 - 1270).
The Maciejowski Bible is an illuminated manuscript which illustrates the initial section of the Old Testament of the Holy Bible.
This is what makes the Maciejowski Bible such a superb compendium, and an unparalleled pictorial record of the minute details of many aspects of the 13th century.

 Vernacular Bibles
Bible stories were also being presented to the people in the form of pictorial narrative.
While the laity could own a Bible, they were not being given access to some of the more tricky bits which could lead to the development of wrongheaded notions.
While large numbers of the Latin Vulgate Bible were being produced in the 13th century for the expanding clerical groups, the fancy vernacular volumes for the laity might be seen as a prettying up, but dumbing down, of this most complex and fundamental Christian text.

 Maciejowski Bible
The Maciejowski Bible is an incredible resource for medieval enthusiasts - the entire collection of images can be found online in great detail.
The images illustrate key points in the Hebrew Bible and show people in contemporary, that is 13th century, dress.
The main points to note in women's clothing are the extravagant drape and length of apparently simple cotes, the open 'under-arm' seams which allow them to be tied back for work (see the image of Ruth in folio 18) and very pretty striped stockings.

Medieval   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Like most Medieval manuscript illuminations, the mid-13th century Maciejowski Bible depicts scenes from the Old Testament in "modern dress".
This aspect of the bible, coupled with its wide ranging collection of utensils, equipment, armour and clothing makes it one of those sources ideally suited to re-enactment needs.
In this Bible, braies - the male undergarments of our period - are depicted in a number of stories: they are worn by hot and hard-working farmhands, they are shown worn by some semi-stripped hanged men, and even King Saul wears a pair.

Morgan Bible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Morgan Bible (The Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, Ms M. 638) is a medieval picture bible of 44 folios.
This book has long been thought to have been created under the direction of Louis IX of France in the mid-1240s, but A. Stones, after indications of others such as F. Avril, has long argued that it was most likely illuminated in the northern counties of France, ca.
The Morgan Bible is also called the "Morgan Bible of Louis IX", the "Book of Kings", the "Crusader Bible", and the "Maciejowski Bible".

 Medieval Instruments V: Fiddles
With the wide variety of different kinds of fiddles in the 13th century and the obvious delight on the part of the illuminators of the Cantigas in showing exotic instruments, it is disappointing that almost all the fiddles shown in the manuscripts are of the common French type.
This is an illumination from an illustrated Bible roughly contemporary with the Cantigas and which is closest to it in style and spirit.
It was produced in northern France around 1250 and is known as the Shah Abbas or Maciejowski Bible.

 Gown, Hanging Sleeve, c.1250-1300
In poring over the Maciejowski bible for clues to the cut for our split skirt tunic, we noticed how frequently overgowns with hanging sleeves appeared.
It would seem that the ability to wear the gown with the sleeves on the arm or hanging behind the arm were very popular, providing a level of flexibility akin to the modern practice of layering, without the necessity of disrobing.
Examples of this style of gown being worn by women are seen in the Maciejowski bible (Folio 10 Verso).

This outfit is based on the Maciejowski Bible, a french manuscript from ca 1250, which can be viewed at Medieval Tymes website.
The most common headwear for women with this type of dress seems to be a wrap or bag of linen cloth, as seen on the second picture, but on married women you sometimes see a wimple and veil, as I'm wearing on the first picture.
There are several examples of women with the sleeves hanging but they could also be tied behind the back, which can be seen on a leaf of the Maciejowski Bible which depict the adulterous affair of David and Batsheba, where the servant woman who brings Batsheba bath water has tied her sleeves behind her back.

These are images from the Maciejowski Bible, the "Holy Grail" for most medievalists.
It is our presumption that you, the medievalist, given the choice between clear, detailed images or rapid "speed-loading" images would prefer to see these images clearly rather be overly concerned with how rapidly they loaded.
It is our guess that you will not mind waiting a few seconds longer in order to gain clear, distinctive Maciejowski imagery.

 King Louis’ Picture Bible
This Bible is also notable for its depiction of medieval dress and weaponry in telling Biblical tales.
The creators of this Bible, in order to make its lessons relevant to contemporary audiences, set Old Testament stories - from the story of Creation to the story of David & Absalom - in their own 13th-century environments.

 AVISTA: Snail and Soldier
In a plate from the Maciejowski Bible (c.1240) a soldier dressed in an orange jupon carries a sword with a scalloped-tip blade that has the same sort of umbrella-like handle.
The Maciejowski soldier's sword has a pair of notches, but one similar notch at the end of the blade is clear in Villard's soldier's weapons.
Note, too, that the soldier at the top-center in the Maciejowski Bible image wears an angular kettle hat similar to that of Villard's soldier.

Arms and Armour in the Maciejowski Bible - NetSword Discussion Forums
The Maciejowski Bible is, unfortunately, not currently in print, and AFAIK the facsimile edition is also out of print.
The swords in the Maciejowski Bible seem to be, for the major part, Type X or Xa weapons, with Type-G plain disk pommels and Style 3 crosses.
As far as I remember (don't have the bible here, just look at it every now and then at a friends place) the basic form of the 'chopper' weapon's blade is also represented on some eating knives in the Mac.Bible.

 myArmoury.com - The Maciejowski "Glaive"
The illuminations of the Maciejowski Bible often depict a two-handed cutting weapon that is sometimes referred to as a “glaive” or fouchard.
The text itself (Joshua Chapter 8 of the Bible) gives no details about any deaths in particular apart from the hanging of Ai's king, so it is unlikely that the knight in question is referring to a particular event with a particular weapon.
Some are shown in the Maciejowski bible with single hand mounting, other having straight two hand handles, some are mounted as short staff weapons.

But a closer look at the Bible shows he was an honest man who came to the aid of his country, and sacrificed his own happiness, losing his sons, and his sanity in the bargain.
But a closer reading of the Bible reveals that David was an ambitious youth, the age of Saul’s own son.
For those of us who focus our energies on a perpetual search for perfection, the Bible reminds us that life is a journey with trade-offs.

Since the Bible only mentions him using javelins and a sword, there would definately be no biblical back story for such a depiction.
Also, later in the same bible there is anothe very similar weapon, though I don't recall exactly which folio (I think it is part of the story of David's kingdom being destroyed by his sons' waring).
The Maciejowski Bible shows several broken lances/spears and all of those exhibit a splintered end where they broke.

First image is from a 13th Century Maciejowski Bible showing Joab and his men besieging the city of Abel.
The sovereign control of God over all things is seen in the triumph of the gospel over paganism and persecution; and although it may cost many their very lives (even Peter and Paul, whose lives are described in Acts), ultimate victory is assured through Jesus our Lord.
Let me make this clear; I believe the Word of God (the Bible) and I believe EVERY word is true; I just do not understand everything I read, and I seek to know the truth of Scripture, so when I throw these things out, I am not "doubting" the veracity of the word.

This illustration from the Maciejowski Bible shows that braies were worn as pants, and not a private garment as we consider modern underwear.
The Maciejowski Bible shows a guy with the cord seeming to be tied just above the top of the chausse.
This may indicate that the cord is just tied as a loop and passes through a grommet or leather hole in a reinforcement on the chausse and then passes over the waist belt.

his green wool tweed dress is based upon the pattern of the Gown of St. Elizabeth of Thuringia dated to c.1230 and images from the Maciejowski bible dated to c.1250.
After using the pattern available at the Some Clothing of the Middle ages website to make a mock-up version in cheap fabric, I found out that it works surprisingly well, but decided to make some small alterations to the pattern to make the sides of the dress drape better.
As you can see from the pattern drawing of the original only the upper part of the sleeve remained, so it is unsure if this gown had butonned sleeves or not.

It may be identifiable with the Bible that was given to the charterhouse of Witham in Somerset, although it has been argued that this is probably another Bible (Oxford, Bodleian Lib., MS.
The gift to Witham was the result of pressure from King Henry II on the monks of St Swithun, and on hearing this the prior of Witham, St Hugh of Lincoln, returned the book to Winchester.
If the Bible now in Winchester was that given to Witham, its text, if not all its illumination, must have been completed before 1186, the year St Hugh became Bishop of Lincoln.

I chose the kettle helm because of its relatively simple shape and because it's a type of helm I wanted for events and for my persona.
It is roughly based off of 13th and 14th century manuscripts, specifically the Maciejowski Bible and "Die Manessesche Liederhandschrift." A number of the examples are obviously riveted together in sections while some do not show these rivet lines.
There are many examples of kettle helms in the Maciejowski Bible.

Reality check and name for sword in medieval illustration - vikingsword.com forums
I know the Holkham Bible has a depiction of a curved choping blade with a short back spike on it (though the grip is longer).
On the images from the Maciejowski Bible we can see a heavy chopping blade, having more or less marked cogs on the upper part of the butt and a moderate contracurvature of the chopping part of the blade, which was only used by common people.
It is an illustration of fourteenth Century head gear, no comment is made about the weapon nor whether it is copied from somewhere (manuscript, bible, grave stones etc) or if it is made up by him from the arms and armour known.
