Macin Mountains, created during the Hercinian oro-genesis, are the oldest mountains in the country and one of the oldest in Europe.
Macin and its surrounding is the only Romanian region where there are still important areas of specialized steppe vegetation and these do not occur in other parts of Romania or elsewhere in the Balkans, Macin Mountains National Park representing the only place in the country which protects this type of vegetation.
Macin Mountains is one of the most important nesting areas in Romania for raptors, being also an important resting site for raptor migrants.

The process of its formation was a stagewise event, beginning with the Lower Proterozoic during the Karelian orogenesis, followed by the Baikal orogenesis which shaped an exondated relief developed on granitic gneiss and crystalline schists in the south and green schists in the centre.
The majority of soils are molisols: cambic chernozems in the sylvosteppe; chocolate chernozems, and carbonated chernozems in the steppe, on the marginal glacis and on the low, flat interfluves, respectively; on the western and eastern parts of Dobrogea representative soils are kastanozems.
Soils variously affected by podzolisation, more precisely the argillic brown soils, are found at depth of 250 m under the oak forests of the Macin Mountains, on Niculitel Plateau or Babadag Plateau.

Vegetation presents some territorial differences, due to the general climate characteristic to the steppe, due to the hilly relief or the mountain one and due to the large aquatic surfaces.
The steppe area has been removed in a proportion of 95 % and includes some xerophytic meadows where predominant are hair grass (Agrostis vulgaris), beard grass (Andropoon ischeamon), sagebrush (Artemisia), meadow grass (Poa pratensis) etc. The forest steppe is represented by groves of oak (Quercus).
In Babadag plateau and Macin Mountains there ia a forest level composed of evergreen oak (Quercus petraea) forests in which there can be found the linden tree (Tilia) and the common maple (Acer pseudoplatanus).

Due to the rain and late snow in the mountains, the level of water in the delta was way above average with many areas flooded, but as we were in a boat this just meant that we could reach more places.
