In fact, it was one of the (very) few Macintosh models which could be set either in a horizontal or vertical position.
The Macintosh IIx was introduced by Apple in 1988 as an incremental update of the original Macintosh II model.
What also made the Mac IIcx significant was the fact that its components and parts snap into the computer case without the need for screws.

The Macintosh IIcx is the third new Macintosh announced in the past six months that features full 32-bit 68030 and 68882 microprocessors and Apple's SuperDrive, which allows users to easily access non-Macintosh disks.
A new capability introduced with Macintosh IIcx is auto-restart, which allows the system to restart itself in the event of a power outage.
The IIcx is compatible with Macintosh II and IIx software, and the high-capacity SuperDrive works with Apple File Exchange to make the system compatible in a multivendor environment; able to read and write MS-DOS files.

History of computer design: Macintosh IIcx
The IIcx is in essence a compact version of the Macintosh II.
The recessed base with its vertical lines are missing, replaced instead by a single line wrapping around to the back of the case, mirroring in its placement the break less than an inch from the top.
The IIcx came with little rubber feet that could be removed from the bottom of the case and placed on its side for this first use of a "minitower" design.

This article documents my experience retro-fitting an updated 1999 revision 1 Power Macintosh G3/300MHz into a 1989 Macintosh IIcx case during the Fall of 2001 as a nostalgic tribute to my favorite Macintosh of all time, the Macintosh IIci.
A few days later, another friend (yeah, Chris!) dropped off another Macintosh IIcx that he had found in the trash (it still worked!) and an Apple 12" RGB display (I couldn't say no to that - makes a great server display!).
I'd never really use those Macintosh IIcx computers anyway...the cases are nice soft plastic...I had some scrap aluminum, some acrylic sheet, ATX chassis parts, bits of wire, LEDs, bolts, screws, nuts...I could make something that mostly looked like a IIci, but more powerful and somewhat up-to-date.

Following on the heels of the successful Mac IIx, the Mac IIcx took the same processing power and managed not only to cram it into a smaller case but also to reduce the power supply to a mere 90w.
The IIcx may not have brought anything new to the party in terms of technology or processing but it was physically a lot smaller and cost almost $2500 less than its predecessor.
Sharing the same case design as the Mac IIci, the IIcx is very much a run of the mill Mac: It's performance is Ok, it looks Ok (possibly a little dull and 'beige box') and at the end of the day it gets the job done.

The IIcx uses a 16 MHz 68030 CPU, so performance is virtually identical to the Mac IIx.
Because the IIcx uses a NuBus video card instead of onboard video, bit-depth has no significant effect on non-graphics results.
As is not uncommon, video at 8 bits is slightly faster than at 4 bits (easier for the computer to work with whole bytes), but running in 1-bit mode does speed graphics by 19%.
