Macintosh Centris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Macintosh Centris was a set of three 1993 Macintosh models that were built around the Motorola 68LC040 and 68040 CPUs.
The name was chosen to indicate that the consumer was selecting a Macintosh in the center of Apple's product line: lower performance (and price) than the Quadra computers, but higher performance (and price) than the Performa computers of the time.
It used the same case as the older Macintosh IIvx and Macintosh IIvi computers, and subsequent computers using the same case were the Macintosh Quadra 650 and the Power Macintosh 7100 line.

The Macintosh programs tended to be aimed at a younger audience and included many educational activities.

The MacMania Museum: Desktops: Macintosh IIvi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Technically the IIvi and the IIvx were the same machine with one or two minor differences, the most notable being performance.
The other major crippling factor was the IIvi's inability to support Level 2 cache and this robbed the machine of any real chance of being able to compete (even if the optional 68882 FPU was installed).
The inside of the IIvi is not a place that especially offends, but it just doesn't show that design flair that Apples are famed for.

The IIvi dropped out of the news a while back, with rumors flying that it would only be sold outside of the US, and that proves to be true.
The only real difference between the IIvi and IIvx is that the IIvi uses a 16 MHz 68030 chip in comparison to the IIvx's 32 MHz chip.
It appears that Apple didn't want the IIvi cutting into the Performa 600's niche, not surprisingly, but the extra machine does confuse matters slightly.
