Old World ROM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Old World ROM Macintosh computers are the Macintosh models that use a Macintosh Toolbox ROM chip, usually in a socket (but soldered to the motherboard in some models).
The Toolbox then checks for a disk in the floppy drive, and scans all SCSI buses for a disk with a valid System Folder, giving preference to whatever disk is set as the startup disk in the parameter RAM.
Since the Old World ROM usually boots to the Toolbox, most OSes have to be installed using a boot loader from inside Mac OS.

Vaal Triangle Info Encylopedia - Macintosh_Toolbox   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The term Toolbox originally applied only to the set of subroutines (or functions) and global variables that implemented the user interface (hence Apple's references to the User Interface Toolbox), and not the operating system proper.
When the original Macintosh 128K was designed, ROM was faster than RAM, and RAM was expensive, so a large part (though not all) of the Macintosh's operating system was implemented in ROM, so that common routines (such as libraries, graphics routines, etc) did not need to be loaded from an operating system file at all.
The trap mechanism of the Motorola 68000 microprocessor was used to dispatch Toolbox system calls to the appropriate subroutines in ROM.

Inside the Mac OS The Macintosh is an integrated product encompassing the deep meshing of hardware with software, both of which are designed and manufactured by Apple Computer.
Developers started ignoring the Toolbox and writing their own user interface resources with the result that the cohesive look and feel of the Mac began to fragment.
While the Toolbox is interested in the visual Mac experience, the operating system focuses on underlying operations, such as file input and output, memory management, and process and device control.

The Macintosh was originally intended to be programmed in Pascal - the Toolbox assumes Apple Pascal with it's idiosyncratic string convention of putting the string length as the first byte of the string and omitting any NULL delimiter.
