Rice was later road manager for the new Falcons before becoming a solo vocalist.
Rice has written several selections, the most famous of which is "Mustang Sally," a number that has been recorded by many artists, including Wilson Pickett and the then Young Rascals.
Rice's version reached number 15 on the R&B charts in 1965, and is the only hit he's ever enjoyed as a solo performer.

Sir Mack Rice was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi but at an early age moved to Detroit, where he has been a major force in the music scene since the 1950's.
Sir Mack went solo in 1962 and in 1965 wrote the incomparable "Mustang Sally" which was recorded by Wilson Pickett.
Sir Mack became involved with Stax records in Memphis, as a songwriter/producer/arranger in 1969.

In 1956, Rice became a member of the soul quartet, the Falcons, along with Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pickett and Joe Stubbs.
In 1962, Mack Rice went solo and three years later he wrote the immortal song Mustang Sally for Blue Rock, a subsidiary of Mercury Records.
Wilson Pickett recorded the song and when it was released a year later, Mercury "knighted" Rice for the song's phenomenal success.

In 1965, Rice, now a solo artist, was visiting singing legend Della Reese in New York when he heard the story that Reese was going to buy her bandleader a new Lincoln for his birthday.
Rice next took the song over to Aretha Franklin's home to put it to music.
With Aretha playing piano, he recorded the song, but it was the version of "Mustang Sally" done by former Falcon Wilson Pickett that became as huge a hit as the car itself.

Mack had been with the 5 Scalders, another group from Northern High.
With the lineup of Joe Stubbs, Eddie Floyd, Mack Rice, Willie Schofield, and Lance Finnie, the classic Falcons group was in place and they could now settle down to serious recording.
Mack Rice became their road manager to provide a link between the two groups.
