Located 428 km north-east of Sydney on the Macleay River, Kempsey is a large and important rural centre which is a popular stopping point for people making the journey north along the Pacific Highway.

River systems can sometimes be affected by unforeseen or irregular events-such as algal blooms or the start of bird-breeding seasons.

The history of the Macleay Valley is as fascinating as it is diverse and one of the best ways to appreciate it is to visit the Macleay River Historical Society's award winning Museum in South Kempsey.
The earliest European settlement was recorded in 1827 when Captain A.C. Innes, the commandant at Port Macquarie, established a cedar party north of Euroka Creek on the Macleay River.
Up until 1893, the entrance to the Macleay River was at Grassy Head and droghers regularly plied the river carrying produce to meet the ocean going ships which tied up at Kempsey wharf.

 Walkabout - Frederickton
Located 436 km north of Sydney on the Macleay River, Frederickton is one of those places where it is so easy to pass through the town barely noticing the attractive and historic hotel and certainly not stopping to walk down to the banks of the Macleay River.
Their peaceful existence was briefly disturbed in 1817 when John Oxley passed through the area but he found the Macleay River swampy and inaccessible and did nothing to encourage settlement.
This area of the Macleay is noted for its Australian bass which can be caught in the summer months between October and April.

Wollomombi Falls, from an Aboriginal word, are located in the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, due East of Armidale, New South Wales.
They are located on the Wollomombi River, a tributary of Macleay River.
At one time they were believed to be the tallest in Australia.

The river, estuaries and back waters are a fisherman’s paradise with Blackfish, Bream, Whiting, Tailor, Mullet, Flathead, and Jewfish caught downstream of Kempsey.

Gwen Hackett drew my attention to and obtained for me a copy of the March 1995 journal of the Macleay River Historical Society that told the story of two Saul brothers that emigrated from Norfolk to Australia and settled on the Macleay River.
The Macleay River Historical Society has kindly given permission to publish extracts from their journal.
The family later moved to the Macleay where Janet found a position with the Oakes family as nursemaid to the children.

The wilderness is home to the Macleay tortoise, a recently discovered species, and the rare mammal, the Hastings River Mouse, considered to be in imminent danger of extinction.
The Macleay Gorges Wilderness includes three wild river systems These are the Apsley-Yarrowitch wild river system with an aggregate length of 130 km; the Macleay-Chandler wild river system with an aggregate length of 170 km; and the Styx River system with a length of 23 km.

The Macleay River (and to a lesser extent the Apsley) provide good opportunities for canoeing, although access is difficult and river flows vary depending on recent rainfall.
As the park is not continuous along the length of the Macleay and Apsley Rivers, you'll need permission from landholders for camping outside the park.
The only safe way past a river fence is to get out of the river and carry your craft through the nearby gate.

The story is largely taken from the March 1995 journal of the Macleay River Historical Society to whom we are grateful for giving permission to publish extracts.
His wide experience with floods in the area where he lived was of great benefit to many other farmers who relied on his advice for the movement of stock.
Gwen Hackett who kindly sent me the Macleay River Historical Society journal also forwarded on to me details of an advert that appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald seeking descendants of Thomas James Saul and his wife Edith.

I draw the attention of the House to the fact that this happened during recent flooding of the lower Macleay River, just to the east of Kempsey.
Floodgates at locations on the tributaries of the Macleay, east of Kempsey, are used during flood peaks.
Emergency Services monitor the flood levels, and when it seems that low-lying land to the east of Kempsey will be flooded, the floodgates are opened to redirect water to mostly low-lying grazing land and away from populated areas such as Gladstone, Smithtown and Kinchela, away from roads, et cetera.

The factory does not open to the public for hat sales or tours - however hats may be purchased from retail outlets in Kempsey and a video of the hat making process is available at the Kempsey Visitor Information Centre.
With sweeping views over the Macleay Valley, and a beautiful Golf Course Fredo is famous for pies.

 Kempsey
These are obvious symbols of development, yet they remain oblique reminders of the days when the Macleay River was a shipping thoroughfare.
Once the river emptied its two-kilometre -wide mouth under Grassy Head, not far from Stuarts Point (today a popular tourist centre) and named for John Stuart, one of the early shipbuilders.
The pilot station on Grassy head (then Macleay Heads) was moved to the South West rocks headland in 1902, after the New Entrance was established following a breakout in 1893.
