Macoupin County was organized in 1829, the 50th county created in Illinois.
Its county seat is Carlinville, located 45 miles south-southwest of Springfield and about 45 miles northeast of St Louis, along the historic Route 66.
Carlinville also is home to the Macoupin County Historical Society Museum and Standard Addition, the largest single repository of Sears Homes in the U.S. The only Union cemetery in the nation is in Mount Olive.

Macoupin County, Illinois was created by an act of the Illinois General Assembly on January 17, 1829.
The name Macoupin is of Indian extract, being shortened version of the Indian word "Macoupiana," which meant "white potato." The Indians used this name for the wild artichoke which grew in abundance along the waterways in the county.
The Macoupin County Courthouse, located in the county seat, Carlinville, is a 191-foot architectural phenomenon from the nineteenth century.

A county history states that a church was organized at the home of John Powell in Hilyard township in the southern part of Macoupin County, possibly as early as 1820, and that Elder William Jones was the first preacher.
Long Run Church first joined the Illinois Association in 1830, at which time 12 members were reported in fellowship, four of whom had been added during the year.
Mt. Pleasant Church was organized in 1833, and joined the Illinois Association that same year, her messengers being David Gimblin and Christopher Dishir.
