Macoupin County is a county located in the state of Illinois.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 17.50% who are 65 years of age or older.
Clinton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois, and determined by the U.S. Census Bureau to include the mean center of U.S. population in 1960.

Macoupin County was organized in 1829, the 50th county created in Illinois.
Its county seat is Carlinville, located 45 miles south-southwest of Springfield and about 45 miles northeast of St Louis, along the historic Route 66.
Carlinville also is home to the Macoupin County Historical Society Museum and Standard Addition, the largest single repository of Sears Homes in the U.S. The only Union cemetery in the nation is in Mount Olive.

Macoupin county erected its first courthouse in 1820, a log building costing $128.66.
By 1867, thirty years after the brick courthouse was completed, the county was again in need of a larger facility.
When it was completed, it was the largest county courthouse in the United States, with the possible exception of one in New York City, and larger than the Illinois Statehouse.

There currently are only a handful of municipalities in the county that have their own 911 systems in place, including Gillespie, Mount Olive, Virden, Staunton and Carlinville.
At the same time, the Macoupin County Emergency Telephone Systems Board is working to implement a permanent, enhanced 911 system that will take the place of the temporary system once it is up and running, Pitchford said.
For example, he said the caller will need to tell a dispatcher what kind of emergency they are having, the house number and street where the emergency is occurring, the location's telephone number and their name.

Denby said before the FCC began enforcing the mandate, the county's telephone companies had been slow to work with the county to implement the enhanced 911 service.
Under the temporary system, which should be in place right around the Sept. 11 deadline, Denby said towns in Macoupin County that do not already have 911 service will be able to dial 911 and the phone companies will route their calls to an area that has the service, such as neighboring Morgan County.
Jim Pitchford, Macoupin County coordinator of emergency services, said many larger towns in the county - including Carlinville, Gillespie, Staunton, Virden and Mount Olive - already have their own 911 service.

Another interesting chase in Macoupin County, IL - an area that has been very good to me this year.
As I approached Carlinville from the S and E, I could see a rock hard updraft tower leading into a large anvil backsheared to the SW; most of the anvil was drifting off to the E or ESE.
Later still, it died out in northwest Fayette County after 10:30, but several other cells went up just to the west in Macoupin and Montgomery Counties producing reports of large hail.
