Macquarie Harbour is a large, shallow, inlet on the West Coast of Tasmania, Australia.
The first settlement at Macquarie Harbour was on Sarah Island, a small island in the harbour.
Later the small port of Strahan was developed on the shores of Macquarie Harbour to support the nearby mining settlements, mainly Queenstown.

Lachlan Macquarie was born on the island of Ulva off the coast of the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides, a chain of islands off the West Coast of Scotland.
Macquarie's policies, especially his championing of the emancipists and the lavish expenditure of government money on public works, aroused opposition both in the colony and in London, where the government still saw New South Wales as a place to dump convicts and not as a future dominion of the Empire.
Macquarie was buried on the Isle of Mull in a remote mausoleum with his wife and son.

The original Macquarie Lighthouse, the first to be built in Australia, was designed and supervised by the renowned convict architect Francis Greenway and Captain John Gill.

Lachlan Macquarie was born on the tiny island of Ulva, in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland and grew up on the nearby larger island of Mull.
The colony's first military governor (previous holders of the office had all been navy men), Macquarie was able to draw on his experience as a staff officer in the raising and organisation of colonial revenue-measures in this area included the introduction of coinage (1813) and the establishment of the colony's first bank (1817).
Macquarie's resignation was accepted in 1821 and he sailed for England in 1822.

Thus (78) William Earl, an indoor servant who had been sent to Macquarie Harbour for opening their Masters desk with a false key and taking from thence 2 10s/-, was charged on the 9 December 1822 with Breaking a saw wilfully or through neglect and sentenced to 50 lashes.
The one used at Macquarie Harbour was of a design known as the thiefs cat each tail being composed of a double twist of whip cord, and each tail containing nine knots; it was a very formidable instrument indeed.

Named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie this 50 kilometres long harbour opens to the sea through the narrow, eddying waters of Hell's Gates and receives the waters of the King and Gordon Rivers.
James Kelly and his group spent three days exploring the huge 285 square kilometre harbour and it was on the basis of their descriptions of the vast stands of trees that, within a year, timber cutters had entered the harbour and were cutting down the magnificent huon pines.
This was extremely dangerous as the entrance to the harbour wasn't properly surveyed until 1819.
