Kelp forest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kelp forests are a type of marine ecosystem established around colonies of kelp; they contain rich biodiversity.
Kelp can stretch 2-30 meters or more (up to 60 m in Macrocystis pyrifera) from their anchors on the sea floor to the surface, providing a vertical infrastructure that is home to many fish and invertebrate species.
Therefore, kelp forests rapidly reach a "mature" status, in striking contrast to terrestrial forests which may take hundreds of years to mature (see old growth forest).

IDENTIFYING REGIONS OF PERSISTENT GIANT KELP (Macrocystis pyrifera) AROUND SANTA CATALINA ISLAND FOR DESIGNATION AS ...
Macrocystis pyrifera is an important species in the marine environment, serving both as structural habitat and food for a wide range of marine invertebrates and fishes.
The response of Macrocystis pyrifera to the disturbance regime around Santa Catalina Island, and therefore its persistence in the face of disturbance, is a complex issue due to the varying geographic impact of disturbance events and the wide range of microhabitats afforded by the island's coastline.
Macrocystis is a perennial alga, with individual plants surviving for several years and entire kelp beds potentially even longer.

 MACROCYSTIS PYRIFERA, GIANT BLADDER KELP
Macrocystis pyrifera, or giant bladder kelp, is sometimes referred to as the sequoia of the sea.
The term kelp forest refers to the dense growths of Nereocystis, Macrocystis and Pelagophycus while the term kelp "beds" is used to refer to the smaller laminariales or brown algae which have limited vertical structure and canopies.
Macrocystis is a perennial kelp with the holdfast surviving 4 to 10 years and the individual fronds 6 to 12 months.

The analysis of the size class information indicated that a large percentage of the kelp plants were recruits and juveniles, which corresponded to a general lack of canopy and secondly, that kelp recruitment was occurring.
Macrocystis density at Imperial Beach, Swami’s, and North Carlsbad decreased in 1998 compared to 1997 although recovery at Point Loma and Cardiff appeared greater (Figure 5).
