With MX, Macromedia is working to position FreeHand as the choice for print designers who need to repurpose their content for the web (which, according to Macromedia, is 70 to 80 percent of them).
FreeHand MX not only bridges many gaps, but it also digs entirely new gaps for the its competition to now bridge.

Macromedia FreeHand 9 review   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Now, just when FreeHand users were beginning to wonder if Macromedia had completely forgotten about them, the company has brought out a new version designed to put minds at ease and to reconfirm FreeHand's central role in a publishing vision straddling both print and Web.
Essentially FreeHand is restricted to producing the simplest of animations and storyboarding and even here its usefulness is limited by the inability to produce Flash's native FLA format files rather than SWF.
Ultimately FreeHand's move towards the Web does make sense, but it shouldn't be at the cost of general graphic design power and needs to be better thought through than this.

Freehand is not the cure all nor is it everything for everyone, but Macromedia has done their homework and the result is quite impressive.
Normally Freehand would be considered on the professional level of vector art along with Adobe Illustrator 8 (r), Corel DRAW 8 (r) and other programs from the other companies.
To begin with, if you are unfamiliar with Freehand, the tutorials are excellent, as are the wizards that can get you well on your way to drawing vector art for a project or laying out a newsletter, etc. I will say, however, that you will not learn this program in 5 minutes.

FreeHand has undergone many significant changes (and ownerships) since then, but the files on these discs are readable by all versions since 3.1.
FreeHand files are "vector" files, meaning they can be used at any size, without requiring any change of resolution--unlike the relief maps and masks, which are bitmapped, and which may require additional treatment in an image manipulation application if they are to be used at wildly differing sizes from the originals.
Users of FreeHand version 3.1 may notice that on some maps (not all) the cyan coastline does not fit exactly to the relief map coastline -- you may see a hairline gap at large magnifications at the opposite extremity of the map from the zero point.
