Carbohydrate Food Intake and Energy Balance   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Macronutrient balance means that the intake of each macronutrient is equal to its oxidation.
There appears to be a hierarchy for substrate oxidation which is determined by the storage capability of the body for each macronutrient, the energy costs of converting a macronutrient to a form with greater storage capacity, and by specific fuel needs of certain tissues.
Unlike other macronutrients, fat does not promote its own oxidation and the amount of fat which is oxidized is the difference between total energy needs and oxidation of the other priority fuels.

Macronutrient composition of treatment beverages for one day, and their proportion of total daily macronutrient and energy intake during the seven day treatment periods.
Overall, macronutrient intake during the seven day observation periods was primarily determined by the composition of the treatment beverages (Table 2).
Based on the results of the current study and others [18-20], it appears that macronutrient intake does not affect preprandial ghrelin, and any macronutrient-specific effects are limited to the post-prandial period.

 The Macronutrient Wars
And if that weren't confusing enough, there is yet another school of thought insisting that the ideal diet consists of a perfect balance of the macronutrients (fats, carbs, and proteins), sometimes citing a "forty-thirty-thirty" ratio.
Fat is more calorically dense than other macronutrients, which is the main reason that experts in the past recommended cutting fat out of the diet.
Overeating any of the macronutrients can cause storage of excess as body fat; it's just that it's far easier to overindulge in refined starches and sweets, and your body's hormones are more apt to react in a way that will store the excess as body fat.

Technical Abstract: As a means to investigate the effect of daily macronutrient composition on food intake, twelve healthy normal weight men (79.9 ± 8.3 kg, 39 ± 9 yrs, 24.1 ± 1.4 kg/m2) were fed continuously for two 8-week periods.
As a means to covertly alter macronutrient intake, subjects consumed a 698 kJ (2093 kJ/d) drink with each meal that was predominately carbohydrate (CHO), fat (FAT) or a combination of protein and carbohydrate (PRO).
It appears as though EI is regulated by macronutrient composition in the short-term, but the effect disappears when feeding is continued past a few weeks.

Insulin sensitivity and macronutrient composition of weight loss diet Nutrition Research Newsletter - Find Articles
The question of whether the macronutrient composition of hypocaloric weight loss diets plays a role in the effectiveness of these diets has yet been undetermined.
Scientists suspect that there may be a relationship between the state of Si and an individual's response to macronutrient composition of a hypocaloric diet.
In order to examine this possible relationship, a working hypothesis that macronutrient composition of a hypocaloric diet (daily deficit of 400 kcal) might be an important variable in the effectiveness of this diet in individuals with differing levels of Si as examined.

 Nutrient Periodization
Nutrient periodization is a robust system of fluctuating macronutrient (carbohydrate, fat, and protein) intake that works in concert with the most current exercise and nutrition research for muscle strength and hypertrophy.
Although there may be a need to increase a particular macronutrient acutely, chronic unbalanced dietary practices may result in decreased performance, loss of muscle, and overall fatigue.
Note that although on a day-to-day basis, macronutrient percentages fall outside the AMDR recommendations, over the course of the week the macronutrients are moderated.

 Topic: Altered Macronutrient Diets
While we discuss the evidence with reference to the modification of single macronutrients (e.g., protein, carbohydrates, fats), the fact is that modifying one macronutrient often entailed the modification of another macronutrient.
However, we did not consider this approach an altered macronutrient diet unless the amount of fat prescribed by the diet professional was less than the DRI for that macronutrient.
For the evidence analysis a diet was classified as being “altered macronutrient” if the prescribed macronutrient makeup fell outside the ranges set by the Institute of Medicine’s Dietary Reference Intakes*.

 Examining Low-Carb & Low-Fat Diets
For years a number of policy makers, agencies and health organizations have established that a "balanced diet" is one that provides no more than 30% of total calories from fat, 55-65% of calories from carbohydrate and 10-15% of calories from protein - regardless of caloric intake.
Few challenge the notion that as calories increase or decrease, these macronutrient ratios remain the same; even fewer have taken the time to consider the detrimental effects of ignoring nutrient-density and instead stay focused on macronutrient mix.
Let me state it here, the overall macronutrient mix - that is the percentage of calories each day you consume as carbohydrate, fat and protein - is not a measure of diet quality.

In nutrition, macronutrients are those nutrients that together provide the vast majority of metabolic energy to an organism.
The three main macronutrients are carbohydrates, proteins, and fat.
They are distinguished from micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals necessary in small amounts to maintain health but not to provide energy.

Enhancement of oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2 by macronutrient fertilization
A global three-dimensional ocean carbon cycle model was used to investigate the use of macronutrient fertilization of the ocean to increase the oceanic uptake of CO To simulate macronutrient fertilization, phosphate was added to the 18°–50°S surface ocean.
The carbon sequestration efficiency of fertilization was determined from the ratio of increased ocean uptake of anthropogenic CO to the rate of phosphate addition to the upper ocean (converted to carbon units using the C/P ratio of organic matter, 106).
The study also discusses several other potential process that could impact the efficiency phosphate fertilization to sequester carbon in the ocean and the potential consequences of large-scale macronutrient fertilization of the ocean.
