INSECT - Online Information article about INSECT
The stomach is a simple, thin-walled sac; sometimes as in Centetes, with the pyloric and oesophageal openings close together; the intestinal canal has much the same calibre throughout, and varies from three (in the shrews) to twelve times (in the hedgehogs) the length of the head and body.
The liver is deeply divided into lobes; the right and left lateral being cut off by deep fissures; both the caudate and Spigelian lobes are generally well developed, and the gall-bladder, usually large and globular, is placed on the middle of the posterior surface of the right central lobe.
Necrogymnurus (Neurogymnurus) from the Lower Oligocene, of the same country, appears to be allied to Hylomys, which Is itself the most generalised of the family, so that the extinct genus, of which Caluxolherium is a synonym, may represent the ancestral type of the Erinaceidae.

Eurasian Insectivores and Tree Shrews - Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan, 1995: Chapter2/1
A common arrangement at one time was to divide the Insectivora into two suborders: the Lipotyphla (with the living families Erinaceidae, Solenodontidae, Nesophontidae, Tenrecidae, Chrysochloridae, Soricidae, and Taipidae), and the Menotyphla, with the families Macroscelididae and Tupaiidae.
The Macroscelididae were placed in a separate order - the Macroscelidea which, together with the order Lagomorpha, was put in the grandorder Anagalidia.
A modified version of this arrangement was suggested by Novacek (1986), who ranked the Insectivora as a superorder, with the Lipotyphla being the only living order, containing two suborders: the Erinaceomorpha for the Erinaceidae, and the Soricomorpha for the superfamilies Tenrecoidea and Soricoidea (Walker, 1991).

 Order INSECTIVORA
The order Insectivora is a collection of primitive yet each highly derived groups, the phylogenetic relationships of which remain obscure.
Both the Macroscelididae and Tupaiidae are now classed as separate orders ( Macroscelidea and Scandentia, respectively), and will be so treated here.
An hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships among the Lipotyphlan families, what now comprise the Order Insectivora with the removal of both Macroscelidids and Tupaiids, is illustrated below.
