Macross has much in common with many timeless and dramatic stories that appear throughout literature, in that its characters are heroic but their passions and problems are human and universal, and are presented with compassion, understanding and humour against the hash background of war.
Macross is a war drama; however the character driven relationship elements take precedence over the war and mecha elements.

Macross Zero is an undeniably huge undertaking; this clearly has one of the biggest budgets to ever be granted to an OVA.
By this, I mean that like countless other Gundam and Macross animes, the OVA finds itself almost constantly deriding war as a pointless and inhumane endeavor, all the while providing bucket-loads of often superfluous combat sequences that are clearly designed to entertain the audience.
Macross Zero, more than anything else, is a work to be admired for the sheer amount of effort put into it.

Macross Zero (and it's spiritual (and licensed -- and Bandai's release is as usual top notch) sibling, Yukikaze, for that matter) has utterly stunning visuals, and a very strong storyline to drive it.
In the earlier episodes of Macross Zero, I agreed with the idea that Yukikaze's cel shaded fighters are the way to go, but Zero's CG and having 2D animation for the Valkyries mixed in, has been making huge strides in quality.
