Rock-fill dams are embankments of loose rock with either a watertight upstream face of concrete slabs or timber or a watertight core.
Earth dams, also called earthen and earth-fill dams, are constructed as a simple homogeneous embankment of well-compacted earth, sometimes with a watertight concrete or clay core or upstream face, or sometimes with a hydraulic fill to produce a watertight core.
A type of temporary earth dam occasionally used in high latitudes is the frozen-core dam, in which a coolant is circulated through pipes inside the dam to maintain a watertight region of permafrost within it.

Mactaquac Dam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mactaquac Dam is a hydroelectric dam built on the Saint John River in the Canadian province of New Brunswick and operated by NB Power corporation.
The dam itself is a rock-fill structure sealed by clay and combined with a concrete spill-way, forming an arch across a narrow section of the river between Kingsclear on the west bank, and Keswick Ridge on the east bank.
The recreational facilities and economic development spawned by the dam are said to be inspired by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which undertook several similar projects in the southern United States.

Mactaquac and its Facilities   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
When the Mactaquac Hydroelectric Dam was proposed for the Saint John River in the early 1960's, concern was expressed over its probable effects on the migratory fish resources.
As a result of this concern, a fish collection facility was built into the dam, a trucking operation was initiated to distribute fish upriver, and the Mactaquac Fish Culture Station was constructed to compensate for salmon production losses in the flooded area behind the dam.
Today, the Mactaquac "fish" facilities include the Fish Collection Facility and trucking operation (at the dam), the Accelerated Rearing Facility (beside the dam), and the Main Salmon Hatchery (on this site).
