By adding hordes of cute children, toning down the ultraviolence that marked the previous movies and adding some Tina Turner songs (back then she was quite popular) the film tries aiming at an audience different to the ones that the first two such box office hits.

He is rescued by a valley of children, left their by their parents, who seen him as their saviour, the messianic Captain Walker, the pilot of their crashed plane that they have been waiting to return and deliver them to Tomorrowland.
The first, Mad Max (1979), had been a violent, nihilistic revenge drama which had built up a modest cult audience, while the second, Mad Max 2/The Road Warrior (1981), had been a runaway international hit and inspired an entire genre of post-holocaust action films.
Indeed with the plot turning Max into the destined saviour herding a group of lost kids to safety, there are times this doesn't seem too far removed from being a Steven Spielberg movie set in the aftermath of a holocaust.
