 Mad River Local Schools :: History
The Mad River, which flows through the township, was a fine millstream for sawmills, gristmills, and copper stills.
Mad River High School was dedicated in 1957 after being built at a cost of $2.6 million, and is situated on a 45 acres of land.
The school, to be called Mad River Junior High, was built on Harshman Road behind Mad River Elementary and housed 8th and 9th graders when it opened in March of 1964.

Mad River Canoe takes its name from the Mad River, a north-flowing river in the state of Vermont.
Mad River Canoe was founded in 1971 by Jim and Kay Henry, both accomplished canoeists and kayakers who shared a passion for wilderness tripping and whitewater racing.
It was in their woodshed in Waitsfield, Vermont that the first Mad River Canoe was born out of a need for a higher performance, more durable canoe than was currently available.

The trail is on the South bank of the Mad River and is a sunny ride from Eastwood MetroPark to downtown Dayton.
The great blue herons were fishing in the river on the day we rode the trail; we also saw mallard ducks and Canadian geese in the wetlands along the river.

The purpose of this project was to correct and update the information on the Mad River contained in the Ohio Division of Watercraft pamphlet "Boating on Ohio’s Streams: 2 Southwest Section," which was last published in 10/95.
There are strainers and debris build up on these sections of the river (particularly on curves and against bridge abutments) and paddling skills are necessary to negotiate passageways and/or move to the riverbank for portage.
River level should be checked and the weather forecast taken into consideration before embarking on a river trip.
