After gaining more popularity, they recorded an album and changed their name to Mad Season, which is an English term for the time of the year when psilocybin mushrooms are in full bloom.
Baker died of a heroin overdose in January of 1999.

Mad Season then supposedly thought about replacing Staley with Lanegan (and changing their name to Disinformation), but no songs were recorded -- resulting in the musicians going their separate ways for good.

Layne Staley Layne Thomas Staley, (August 22, 1967 – April 5, 2002), born in Kirkland, Washington, USA, was the lead singer of the Seattle-based grunge/metal band Alice in Chains and the grunge supergroup Mad Season.
Despite not having a single song completely prepared (only beginnings of songs, according to Martin) and not even having a name for the band, McCready scheduled an unannounced show at the Crocodile Cafe in October 1994, which turned out to be a big success.

Mad Season is a different direction for Matchbox 20, even so far as taking a new name (matchbox twenty.) While not well received both publically and by critics, Mad Season is a much more mature album than Yourself, and illustrates the potential present in the still young matchbox twenty.
It's far from "More Than You Think You Are." That album was not as good as either "Yourself" or "Mad Season." I personally am a fan of all the songs on this album...specifically "Leave." Really good review, by the way.
