Madagascar Movie - The Hollywood News
Madagascar is the latest computer animated concoction from Dreamworks, and while it certainly looks good, it can’t hold a barbecued weed-rat to the likes of Shrek.
Madagascar looks spectacular, and the tone of the film is more old school than contemporary (think Rocky and Bullwinkle), although some of the film’s funniest gags (including a clever riff on American Beauty) are taken from more current headlines.
I also like the film’s introduction to a massive family of lemurs who engage in a rave that proves the be much funnier than the unintentionally hilarious rave in Matrix Reloaded, as well as Alex’s comeuppance as to his real status in the wild.

Their new film, Madagascar, is however aimed at a slightly younger audience, though there are still a number of slick jokes aimed mainly at accompanying adults.
The simple central focus of the film is on the friendship between Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith).
The film takes a while to get going, spending much of its first half establishing Marty's longing to see something of the wild and Alex's desire to stay right where he is - naturally since he's the main attraction at the zoo.

There is a group of penguins, all I believe voiced by one of the film's directors, who scheme and prance around with hilarious, deadpan gusto, eventually commandeering a giant freight boat and, I imagine, ruling the ocean waters.

Madagascar movie review, In Film Australia
As a genre computer animated films generally looks so impressive that it is almost redundant for a critic to praise their aesthetic values.
Without lampooning a genuinely inspirational appearance (ala Nemo) Madagascar gets the balance just about right: the focus is always its characters while the film's secondary niceties -- the backdrops, textures and gradients -- coat their presences with silky pastes of varnish.
Scattered through their adventures are a hilarious bunch of hyper-intelligent penguins, who use their cutesy appearance as a guise to launch a number of impeccably orchestrated military style coups.
