Lanao del Sur is a province of the Philippines located in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
Its capital is Marawi City and borders Lanao del Norte to the north, Bukidnon to the east, and Maguindanao and Cotabato to the south.
It is bounded on the north by Lanao del Norte, on the east by Bukidnon, on the west by Illana Bay, and on the south by Maguindanao and Cotabato.

In Resolution 7131, Comelec ordered special polls in barangay (villages) of Dananao, Tulgao East, Tulgao West, and Butbut in Tinglayan, Kalinga in Lanao del Sur province after heavily armed men blocked the vehicles of the board of election inspectors and took all the boxes containing official ballots and election returns.
In Lanao del Sur, all precincts in the town of Kapatagan did not hold elections because voters threatened the poll officer for his alleged relationship with the incumbent mayor who is seeking reelection.
In Lanao del Norte, no elections were held in Barangay Sagod, Padian Torogan, Salongabanding in Madalum; Barangay Poblacion, Lumbac, Kalilanga, Kitaoan, Bantalan, Damalama, Cayakay, Pagalangan, Bayog, Tagoloan Poblacion, Sigayan, Matingun, and Bagoingud in Balabagan; and Barangay Buadipuso in Buadipuso.

This came amid reports that two Lanao del Sur towns have yet to conduct another round of special elections as the one scheduled for them last Saturday failed anew.
In a statement, Lanao del Norte provincial information officer Richel Umel said Cuevas was forced to declare failure of election at four barangays in Nunungan, Lanao del Norte.
Meanwhile, the municipalities of Madalum and Lumba Bayabao all of Lanao del Sur have yet to conduct another special election.

In Lumbatan town, Lanao del Sur province, the town’s mayor was arrested for indiscriminate firing and preventing poll officials from performing their duties.
Commissioner Resurreccion Borra, in charge of voting in Lanao del Sur, said there was a 50-percent turnout of voters all over the ARMM, a 10-percent increase compared to the elections in 2001.
Allan Macapundag, election officer of Madalum, told reporters that in his town, it was the voters themselves who argued with precinct officials against putting indelible ink on their fingers.

Cotabato City (22 February) -- The government through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Insitute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) was quick to warn residents of the six towns of Lanao del Sur province to be alert as their municipalities are considered land-slide prone areas.
The latest bulletin from DENR and PHILVOLCS says Mt. Gurain and Dapa located in the middle of the six towns are beginning to show signs of possible landslides due to the continuous rains in the said areas.
The six towns, according to the source, are Bacolod-Calawi, Pualas, Ganassi, Madamba, Madalum and Tugaya.
