At the northern end of Nagada Harbour in Papua New Guinea north of Madang, there are a couple of islands, the smallest of which is Wangat (or Wangad or Wonad) Island.
This was where the original armament of a pair of fixed 0.50-inch machine guns and a single flexible 0.50-inch machine guns was replaced by four fixed (0.50-inch?) machine guns and maybe a cannon (this is not visible on the wrecked plane).
Therefore the Madang aircraft could have been (and probably was) one of the planes modified in Townsville in 1943.
