		Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple's Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to headliner status in the U.S. and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music.
		Made in Japan, its selections drawn from those albums, documented that show, in which songs were drawn out to ten and even nearly 20 minutes with no less intensity, as guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord soloed extensively and Gillan sang in a screech that became the envy of all metal bands to follow.
		By stretching out and going to extremes, Deep Purple pushed its music into the kind of deliberate excess that made heavy metal what it became, and their audience recognized the breakthrough, propelling the original double LP into the U.S. Top Ten and sales over a million copies.

		I found this album to be very innovated and adding the organ to rock music entered rock music into a new category, yet retained the true elements of what rock and roll was all about.
		I recently purchased 'Made in Japan' on C.D. and it was wonderful to hear the old classic sounding as fresh as ever, almost as if it were right off the press recordings.

		On tour in support of the album Machine Head, Deep Purple indulged in some great long-form jams, reaching into the 10-minute range for most of the main set and closing with the now-famed live read of "Space Truckin'." There's a reason this is regarded by many as one of hard rock's cornerstone live recordings.
		The music could easily fly over the edge with a lesser group, with such silly material as "Strange Kind of Woman" (a trite "girl I gotta have ya" rock song) or "The Mule" (with some totally bizarre lyrics flying into a drum solo), but Deep Purple somehow transform the fluff into amazing and deep music.
		Made In Japan puts most live albums to shame, even the really good one's!
