  Madeley Wood Pit Photos
The Madeley Wood Colliery, as was common elsewhere in coal mining, actually consisted of two separate pits — the Halesfield (circa 1861) and Kemberton (1864) Collieries, which were subsequently connected underground in 1939, after this date the Halesfield shafts were used purely for ventilation, pumping and as a second means of egress from the mine.
Each miner had two checks with his number on, one was handed to the "banksman" before entering the cage, it was then hung on a board at the pithead.
Madeley Wood deputy Frank Langford (father of Study Group member Mary Welch) is presented with gifts on his retirement in 1955.

On both varieties of paste produced at Madeley the decorations included flowers, fruit, birds, amorini, delicately executed landscapes and pastoral scenes after the fashion of Watteau and the painters of his school, along with Rococo scrolls and other incidents of embellishment.

Saturday 17th July 2004 is National Archaeology Day and we will be celebrating it in Madeley with a whole series of events on the War Memorial Green and in Madeley Library.
The book was launched at Madeley Parish Open Evening on Monday 17th May when over 55 people came together and enjoyed several rousing choruses of the Sutton Hill Song, presentations to the Book Group members and a taste of Pat Partridge’s delicious nibbles.
