The Madeley Wood Colliery, as was common elsewhere in coal mining, actually consisted of two separate pits — the Halesfield (circa 1861) and Kemberton (1864) Collieries, which were subsequently connected underground in 1939, after this date the Halesfield shafts were used purely for ventilation, pumping and as a second means of egress from the mine.
The baths, the first in Shropshire, were built by the Miners' Welfare Fund, a national body, on land donated by a local farmer, W.J. Evison, and opened in 1941.
Madeley Wood deputy Frank Langford (father of Study Group member Mary Welch) is presented with gifts on his retirement in 1955.

The ironworks at Coalbrookdale in Madeley parish were later to become famous: charcoal was the traditional fuel used in the smelting of iron,[8] and in the early eighteenth century Abraham Darby pioneered at Coalbrookdale the coke-smelting process which paved the way for the Industrial revolution.
Of the descriptions of the petitioners in SP 23/105 (see note 7), the minister of Madeley's (p.203) are friendly disposed, in contrast to those of the Shropshire sequestration commissioners.

The china factory at Madeley was established and conducted by Thomas Martin Randall who, prior to engaging in this enterprise, was a member of the firm of Robins and Randall, Burnsbury Street, Islington, china decorators.
At Madeley the most capable decorators were employed and nearly all the decoration was distinctly in the French eighteenth century manner, especially in the particulars more or less typical of Sevres.

There are several stations in this parish on the Madeley and Coalbrookdale and the Severn Junction and Wellington branches of the Great Western line of railway, and a station on the Coalport branch of the London and North-Western line.
A great many of the people are employed in the mines, quarries, and extensive ironworks of Madeley Court and Madeley Wood, as well as in the manufacture of porcelain, rope, and oil.
The workhouse for the Poor-law Union of Madeley, which comprises 12 parishes, is in this parish.

Sir Basil Brooke (1576-1646) of Madeley Court was Lord of the Manor of Madeley (1598-1646), his family having purchased the rights at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries.
By 1700 the whole of the Madeley bank of the River at this point was pock-marked with adits - laterally along the seam outcrops and vertically in the different seams of ironstone, coal and clay.
In 1773 John Fletcher, the saintly vicar of Madeley, described a trip into a "sloping pit" (a drift) which was "supposed to be near a mile under the ground" (Wesleys Life of Fletcher, 1786).

In politics his views since coming to America are in harmony with the principles and policies advanced by the Republican party, while his religious faith is that of the Methodist Episcopal church, he holding membership in the First church in Canton.
His father, Charles Taylor, was a skilled metal worker in Shropshire, England, and he was of the fifth generation of the family to have been born in the town of Madeley, and there his death occurred in 1889, at the age of fifty-eight years.
