On Feb 11, 2002, she was commemorated in a series of new annual bravery awards initiated by the Massachusetts government.
Sweeney and fellow flight attendant Betty Ong, who had also relayed information about the hijacking to personnel on the ground.

None of the pilots of the 4 hijacked planes sent the standard 4-digit alert code that morning, to notify ground controllers about their dilemma (the Flight 11 pilot had plenty of time to do this, since Sweeney said that passengers in First Class were being attacked first).
It’s not that the pilots needed to send this code in order for ground control to have known what was going on--there were plenty of other warning signals going off.
