Topic: Madinan surah

CONK! Encyclopedia: Al-Fatiha   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Some say it was the first complete surah to be revealed[1], coming after the revelation of the beginnings of surat Iqra and of surat al-Muddaththir.
The initial basmala ("In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful") is counted as a verse of this surah, although in other suras at whose beginning it occurs it is not counted by some.
This surah is described in various Hadith as "the mother of the Book" (Umm al-Kitab) and "the mother of the Qur'an" (Umm al-Qur'an), and said to be the seven verses alluded to in Al-Hijr (15:)87:

Qur’an: The Primary Source of Islam
The Qur’anic surahs are thus categorised as Makkan and Madinan, even though some of these surahs may be carrying a few verses which may have been revealed in an era different from the one in which the rest of the surah was revealed.
For instance, the central theme of the seventh surah of the Qur’an (al-‘araf) is the narration of the fact that the messengers of God conveyed the message to their nations and that the nations found guilty of rejecting them were destroyed.
The surahs in the seven groups thus identified have been sequenced in such a manner that each begins with one or more Makkan surahs to be followed until the end of the group by one or more Madinan surahs.

Surahs of the Qur’an have also been classified, according to their origin, into Makkan and Madinan surahs.
A surah is said to be of Madinan origin when its beginning was revealed in the Madinan phase, even if it has verses from the Makkan period in its text.
Madinan themes that are not found in Makkan revelations are of social and legal implications, concerning marriage, divorce, inheritance, punishment, and so on.

IslamWeb - The Makkan and Madinan Qur'an 1/2
The correct and well-established definition of Makkan and Madinan Qur'an is the one in which the surahs and verses revealed prior to the Hijrah, or immigration of Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) from the city of Makkah to the city of Madinah, are known as Makkan.
A good example of this is the surah of an-Nasr, surah 110, which was revealed in Mina (outskirts of Makkah) yet it is classified as Madinan surah because it was revealed just a few months before Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) passed away.
Accordingly, the Makkan Surahs are 85, and the Madinan are 28, the total of which is 113, where it should be 114.

A look at the references to Ibrâhîm as a hanîf in the Madinan sûrahs makes it clear that there is no indication whatsoever of an intention to disregard the messages of Moses and Jesus, nor is there the slightest departure from the emphasis on the unity and identity of the messages of all the Prophets.
Before passing on to the Madinan passages the points illustrated by the Makkan passages may be recapitulated.
In the remaining four Madinan passages the term is of course used in connection with Ibrâhîm; but the same sense of an absolute monotheist and the same uncompromising rejection of polytheism are explicit throughout.

This theme gradually reaches its culmination through the arrangement of various surahs in this group with such precision and beauty that all the stages – from propagation (da`wah) and warning (indhar) to migration (hijrah) and acquittal (bara`at) – in the da`wah missions of the Prophets of Allah are brought to light.
