The 43-story 275 Madison Avenue on the southeast corner at 40th Street, shown at the right, was developed by Alfred B. Jones in 1931 and is notable for the incised fl marble base that is very stylized and refined.
For decades, Madison Avenue, of course, symbolized the advertising industry and Young and Rubicam was the major tenant at 285 Madison Avenue on the northeast corner of 40th Street, an impressively stout though uninteresting 25-story masonry office building erected in 1926 for Isaac Harby and designed by William L.
One of the avenue's most notorious buildings is the sliver apartment tower shown at the right that is known as Morgan's Court, because it is half a block south of the Morgan Library on the avenue.

 Madison Avenue: New York Songlines
Madison Avenue was opened in 1836, named both for the square where it starts and for the former president, who died in that year.
Like Lexington, this avenue was not included in the original 1811 plan of New York, which assumed that few people would want to live in the middle of Manhattan Island, far from the commerce of the shoreline.
It replaced the Madison Square Presbyterian Church (1855-1906), which was noted for being the pulpit of the Rev. Charles Parkhurst, a crusader against vice and corruption; his famous "undercover" tour of the underworld is chronicled in the book Low Life.

Madison Avenue likes those rain-slick nighttime streets in the Naked City.

When I first went to the United States of America, way back in 1977, there were just 200,000 Indians in the whole country, even New York City’s relatively large pocket of desis felt like a tiny sprinkling distributed in an alien wilderness.
The first India Day Parade, in 1981, on Manhattan’s Madison Avenue, was a paltry trickle of sari-clad and turbaned humanity; we bystanders stood in very tiny knots at street corners, almost forlorn in isolation.
Talk about sea changes, the last India Day Parade, on that same Madison Avenue in Manhattan, attracted at least a quarter of a million revelers; the throng jammed historic old Madison Park for the whole day.
