Madison County was established on December 13, 1808 by the governor of the Mississippi territory.
Madison County is bordered by Limestone County to the west, Jackson County to the east, Morgan County and Marshall County to the south and Lincoln County and Franklin County, both in Tennessee, to the north.
The topography in the southern and eastern portions of the county is dominated by the dissected remnants of the Cumberland Plateau, such as Keel Mountain, Monte Sano and Green Mountain.

Madison was the site of a battle in the American Civil War on March 16, 1864, when Col. Josiah Patterson's 5th Alabama Cavalry, supported By Col. James H. Stuart's cavalry battalion and a section of horse artillery, drove Col. Adam G. Gorgas's 13th Illinois Infantry Regiment from the city.
According to the Madison Chamber of Commerce, as of 2004, Madison is the fastest growing city in Alabama.
