The county is named for Virginia statesman James Madison, who later became the fourth President of the United States.
In the county the population is spread out with 21.90% under the age of 18, 18.80% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 20.10% from 45 to 64, and 9.80% who are 65 years of age or older.

Milford was the county seat until 1798, then it was moved to land owned by Colonel John Miller and re-named Richmond after his birthplace of Richmond, VA. Daniel Boone was here in 1769 and 1775; General Green Clay was an early settler, whose son, Cassius Marcellus Clay, was ambassador to Russia during the Civil War.
Madison County is also a center for higher learning with the historic Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond and Berea College, founded in 1855 as the South's first interracial college, in Berea.
