The corps was founded in 1938 after a group of Madison businessmen saw the Racine Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps perform and felt that Madison should have its very own corps comprised of Boy Scouts.
The corps has employed the use of a single female in the color guard in 1971 and in 2005 for the roles of Alice (Alice in Wonderland) and Carmen, respectively.
The corps had been one of the very few remaining holdouts on the switch since DCI rules were changed in the 2000 season.

In 1950 the Corps attended the National Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge and all remember the large field of poison ivy upon which the tents were pitched.

The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, a DCI Division I corps from Rosemont, Illinois.
A drum and bugle corps or drum corps is a musical marching unit (similar to a marching band) consisting of brass instruments, percussion instruments, and color guard.
Until 1999, American drum and bugle corps hornlines were required to be pitched in the key of G. That year, the DCI rules congress passed a proposal to allow any key of bell-front brass instruments on the field (Divisions II and III opted for a two-year moratorium on the proposal.

My experience in drum and bugle corps dates back to the early 1970's when I was a member of the world famous, 12-time National Champion, Toronto Optimists Drum and Bugle Corps.
From 1976 to 1978 I marched with the 2-time Drum Corps International World Finalists, the Seneca Optimists Drum and Bugle Corps of Toronto, Ontario—the last year of which I served as their Drum Major.
I once again served as Drum Major and was proud to claim the Prime Minister's Trophy on behalf of the organization at the Canadian National Championships held in Toronto that summer.

MADISON, WI- A record number of spectators converged on Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, August 8-12, to witness the electrifying performances of the world’s most elite and exclusive marching music ensembles at the Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championships.
At their post-DCI meeting on Aug. 21, the Madison Drum & Bugle Corps Association, Inc. board of directors voted to not extend the contract of Sylvester Salas, who has served in a dual role as executive director of the organization and director of the Madison Scouts since 2003.
