James Madison "Godfather of the Constitution" - The Early America Review, Summer 1997
Madison's point, which was later fleshed out in letters to Jefferson and George Washington, and finally in Federalist 10, was that in a larger republic there was much less likelihood of the tyranny of the majority that had wreaked such havoc under the old Articles.
However, if Madison was not literally the Constitution's "father," he was in my opinion its Godfather (Washington was its father figure).
Recognizing this, Madison was instrumental in persuading Washington to attend.

MONROE, James (1758–1831), fifth president of the U.S. One of the founders of the Jeffersonian Republican party, Monroe served as minister to France and to Great Britain and as secretary of state under President James Madison.
This led to an estrangement between Monroe and his friends, President Jefferson and Secretary of State Madison, that was healed only in 1811, when Madison, who had succeeded Jefferson as president, appointed Monroe his secretary of state.
Monroe then defended himself in a pamphlet that attacked Washington’s foreign policy.

Dolley Madison was thus aware of the perks, responsibilities, and the criticism inherent in the job and was the first presidential spouse to fully embrace the role.

By the time Dolley Payne Todd Madison had attended her husband's inaugural in 1809, she had already served intermittently as presidential hostess during the Jefferson administration.

Amazon.com: James Madison: A Biography: Books: Ralph Ketcham
Madison is a unique founding father because unlike Washington, a General and mentor to many of the other founders, Madison was one of the primary architects that coalesced various philosophical points of view into a cohesive, unique, set of American ideals.
Madison lived in passionate times and he played a leading role in the development and ratification of the Constitution (including a head-to-head struggle with the great Patrick Henry in the Virginia ratifying convention) and then in stoking the flames of bitter partisanship with his erstwhile collaborator, Alexander Hamilton, and the Washington Administration.
Madison is the author of the US Constitution, the Federalist Papers, some of Washington's most famous speeches, much of the Bill of Rights, and he was perhaps the deepest thinker of the Founding Fathers.
