The Madrona Marsh or Madrona Marsh Preserve, located in Torrance, California, is the last vernal marsh remaining in the South Bay area of Los Angeles and one of few wetlands located within an urban landscape.
Situated on land that was set aside for oil production in 1924, Madrona Marsh was never developed—unlike the surrounding city—and remains a valuable natural habitat for birds, reptiles, insects and even small mammals.

Although the Marsh Preserve itself has been here for around thirty five years, the Nature Preserve Center was celebrating the fact that it was opened five years ago.
Connie was using a digital camera to record the day's events and told me that, although many of the same people volunteer at both the Arboretum (on Crenshaw Boulevard) and the Marsh, the Marsh is a City project whereas the Arboretum is a County owned facility.
The Madrona Marsh Preserve and Nature Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m to 5 p.m.

Shortly after monitoring began at the Marsh, concentrations of two heavy metals (cadmium and zinc) were detected in sediment samples, at levels slightly above screening criteria established by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
In the context of water quality it is important to point out that a substantial amount of trash flows into the Marsh from the Jefferson watershed, although fortunately most of it is trapped and removed at the storm drain inlets to the Marsh before it becomes a problem in the Marsh itself.

Initial analyses suggest a strong correlation between phosphate concentrations and bacterial populations; a 66% decrease in phosphate resulted in a 35% reduction in bacterial populations and a 45% reduction in enteropathogenic populations.

Walt Wright, Resident Naturalist at the Madrona Marsh Nature Center, led us on a tour of the reserve, pointing out the impressive improvements and changes that have been made under his direction during the past few years.
It is hard to believe that such a complete, well planned reserve with varying habitats can be found within the city limits.
Madrona Marsh is only blocks away from a major shopping center, and yet inside the area there is grassland, woodland, wetland and a pond with nesting ducks, including Cinnamon Teal and Ring-neck.
