Dancer History Archives by StreetSwing.com - Mae Murray - Main Page
After the run of the show she became a "Ziegfeld Girl" in 1908 portraying one of the " Nell Brinkley Bathing Girl" and by 1915 was one of the star performers, she stayed with the Follies off and on until 1916.
Reportedly, Mae went to Paris to study the popular dances of the day and made a name for herself while there, when she returned, the nightclubs quickly started billing her and her ballroom dances.
Murray was reportedly the creator of the dance "Cinquante-Cinquante".

Mae Murray - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Murray became a star of the club circuit in both the United States and Europe, performing with Clifton Webb, Rudolph Valentino, and John Gilbert as some of her many dance partners.
Murray's most-famous role was probably in the Erich von Stroheim directed film The Merry Widow (1925), opposite John Gilbert.
Mae's great granddaughter, Elizabeth Mae Anastasia, is named after her.

Mae Murray in The Silent Collection by Tammy Stone
Within a short time, Mae was on her way to achieving a new kind of fame she could have never before understood: movie stardom.
In 1923, Mae starred in “Peacock Alley”, which did very well with audiences, and was released by Metro, the company that would soon merge with Goldwyn and Mayer, to become MGM – Mae Murray was their first big contract star.
Mae Murray might have been the first to invent the “movie-star-temper-tantrum-and super-inflated-ego” syndrome (one which countless others would one day assume), but will be recorded in history for her charisma, sensuality, and awe-inspiring dance routines.

Brought up by her grandmother, Murray was dancing before she was a teenager, and in her 20s appeared in the "Ziegfeld Follies" of 1908, 1909 and 1915.
The newly-formed MGM put the volatile combination of Murray, leading man John Gilbert and director Erich von Stroheim together and after nearly a year of fireworks and nervous breakdowns, they produced the classic "The Merry Widow" (1925).
Murray spent the next three decades wandering from coast to coast, her mental and financial condition worsening from year to year.

 Mae Murray article
Pre-sold for Hollywood, Mae's career opened with a series of melodramas in the mid-teens, but an image quickly developed that was far removed from that genre as the exotic, glamorous vamp became her new persona -- a gorgeous blonde seductress, one of the earliest sex goddesses of the screen.
Soon, Mae's 1918 marriage to director Robert Z. Leonard was a significant career boost, establishing a creative duo that brought consistent success for both during the next seven years, under the imprimatur of Tiffany Studios producing for MGM.
Mae Murray died of heart failure in 1965 at the age of 76 (based on an 1889 birthdate).

At the time Bachelor Apartment came out, Mae Murray told Alma Whitaker of the Los Angeles Times that she had been making personal appearances on behalf of RKO and Paramount Publix for two and a half years.
Murray, one of the biggest stars of the silent era, had lost most of her money - and had sued to recoup it.
As a child Miss Murray took up the study of dancing and at the age of fifteen she had attracted so much attention by her marked talent that she was selected for a place in the Zeigfeld Follies, where she became known as the original Nell Brinkley Girl.

In 1916, Lasky star and ex-Follies girl Mae Murray took Allen Corliss, another writer for Photoplay, on such a wild ride that he was unable to conduct a proper interview with her in her new car.
Mae Murray is nothing if not a careful driver--careful of others.
Despite Corliss's jests, Mae Murray was scarcely unique among silent film actresses in attempting to be her own mechanic in those early days of motoring.

There’s talk implying a happy ménage involving Norman Kerry, Ivan Lebedeff, and Claudia Dell, while silent screen superstar Mae Murray has one scene in which she slips into something way comfortable, showing for all to see the actual meaning of the word negligée.
Lawson’s sensibility can be found in the class issues depicted in the film - Park Avenue dwellings "are just around the corner, but a million miles away" from New York City’s tenement buildings - but this being a Hollywood movie, class lines blithely disappear before the final fadeout.
It’s indeed a pity that this was to be Murray’s next-to-last screen appearance.
