  Apamea - LoveToKnow 1911
It was situated where the Marsyas leaves the hills to join the Maeander, and it became a seat of Seleucid power, and a centre of Graeco-Roman and Graeco-Hebrew civilization and commerce.
There Antiochus the Great collected the army with which he met the Romans at Magnesia, and there two years later the treaty between Rome and the Seleucid realm was signed.
For a long period it was one of the greatest cities of Asia Minor, commanding the Maeander road; but when the trade routes were diverted to Constantinople it rapidly declined, and its ruin was completed by an earthquake.

It comprised a narrow coastal strip from Phocaea in the north near the mouth of the river Hermus (now the Gediz), to Miletus in the south near the mouth of the river Maeander, and included the islands of Chios and Samos.
Notable works of the school still extant are the famous archaic female statues found on the Athenian Acropolis in 1885–1887, the seated statues of Branchidae, the Nike of Archermus found at Delos, and the objects in ivory and electrum found by D.G. Hogarth in the lower strata of the Artemision at Ephesus.
Ionia was of small extent, not exceeding 90 geographical miles in length from north to south, with a breadth varying from 20 to 30 miles, but to this must be added the peninsula of Mimas, together with the two large islands.

The remains of the celebrated ancient commercial city of Miletus (Miletos), the largest of the Ionian cities, lie by the little village of Balat near Yeniköy in a narrow bend on the Büyük Menderes (ancient Maeander) some 150km/95mi from Izmir.
Subsequently silt deposited by the Maeander filled the whole of the Latmian Gulf and pushed the coastline 10km/6mi away from the city, which then slowly declined and was eventually abandoned.
The remains, now isolated in the alluvial plain, still bear witness to the greatness of this one-time economic, cultural and political center and are certainly one of the most interesting archeological sites in Turkey.

Greek Coinage and the Polis pg6
Nevertheless, the Greek poleis often clung to their old identification with their patron deities and chief sanctuaries.
On its wreathed tetradrachms, Magnesia-on-Maeander, with its famous sanctuary of Artemis Leukophryene, depicted Artemis on the obverse and her twin Apollo on the reverse, his local identity underscored by the city's badge, the maeander, on which he stands (no. 48).
Although the Greek polis persisted in the Hellenistic kingdoms of Alexander and his successors, and although in brief periods of freedom poleis such as Magnesia-on Maeander celebrated their autonomy on their coins (no. 48), coinage was forever changed by the Hellenistic institution of divine kingship and the development of ruler portraiture in coinage.

Ignatius, who is also called Theophorus, to the blessed by the grace of God the Father in Jesus Christ our Savior, in whom I salute the church which is at Magnesia near the Maeander, and wish it all joy in God the Father and in Jesus Christ.
The location of the church at Magnesia is unknown, but "near the Maeander" signifies the Meander (Menderes) River in Asia Minor.
It was such a twisting, convoluted stream, doubling back on itself so often that it is the origin of our verb "to meander," meaning to take a winding course, to wander idly and aimlessly, etc.
