Gunma Prefecture (or Gumma) (群馬県; Gunma-ken) is located in the Kanto region on Honshu island, Japan.
Gunma is the northwestern-most prefecture of the Kanto, and is mostly mountainous in the north, with more of the population concentrated in the southern half facing Saitama Prefecture.
On January 23, 2006, the municipalities of Gunma, Kurabuchi and Misato from Gunma District and the town of Shin from Tano District merged into the expanded city of Takasaki.

TOKYO, May 14 (Kyodo) -- A Daihatsu Motor Co. subsidiary will close its principal mini car plant in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, in spring 2005, Daihatsu President Takaya Yamada said Monday.
The plant, operated by Daihatsu Auto Body Co., will be replaced by a new Daihatsu Motor factory in Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture, Yamada said at a press conference.

Dateline: MAEBASHI, Japan, Jan. 27 Investigators believe a Russian Makarov pistol was used in Saturday' s fatal shooting attack on gangsters in a bar in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, that left four people dead and two others seriously injured, police sources said Monday.
They believe two shooters planned the attack carefully, the sources said, adding the assailants apparently knew the daily of routine of their target Kunio Goto, former head of an underworld group affiliated with major crime syndicate Inagawa-kai.
