Portugal var sterkt engasjert i gjenerobringskrigen fra araberne, og det var politisk nødvendig med et tettere vennskap med nabokongeriket Castilla.

 Afonso I of Portugal Summary
Alfonso Henriques was born at Guimarães in the castle of his father, Henry of Burgundy, Count of Portugal.
The Leónese king refused to recognize the independence of Portugal until 1143, when Alfonso Henriques became a vassal of the pope; the two cousins then signed a treaty in Zamora under the auspices of the Church.
Although northern Portugal is well protected from Spanish incursions by the rugged Douro Gorge, the most significant roots of Portuguese independence lie in the political weakness of 12th-century Castile, which was unable to prevent the independence of either León or Portugal.

Mafalda is a Spanish language comic strip that was fatally compared to Charlie Brown early enough on to keep it from ever being imported to us.
Mafalda had originally been created by Quino (whose full name is Joaquín Salvador Lavado, Quino being a nickname for Joaquín), as part of an ad campaign for household appliances that got killed.
Mafalda has always been outspoken and questioned the world rather lucidly, making observations about politics and world events without being precocious or cynical.

 Stop bullfighting in Portugal Petition
In Portugal, Spanish type bullfights or death bullfights have been forbidden since at least 1928, when the Government considered these events inappropriate for a civilised society (bullfighting had already been totally forbidden in Portugal in 1836, but that law only lasted for an year).
Generally, the bullfighting tradition in Portugal, though morally unacceptable, is less brutal than the Spanish one, since the show does not involve the killing of the animals in the arena.
We have solid reasons to believe that this legislative measure was mostly motivated by the power of the Spanish bullfighting industry and its influent lobbies in Portugal (it is important to remember that the killing of bulls in the arena is not even a Portuguese tradition, but a Spanish one).

A great part of "Mafalda"'s charm is that these comic strips allow us to see many matters from the point of view of a young but highly intelligent girl, who isn't old enough to know that speaking her mind isn't always the right thing to do.
