Mafdet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since venomous animals such as scorpions, and snake, are killed by felines, Mafdet was seen as a feline goddess, although it is uncertain whether she was meant to be a cat, panther, or mongoose.
In art, Mafdet was shown as a feline, or a woman with a feline head, or a feline with a woman's head, sometimes with braided hair which ended in the tails of scorpions.
It was said that Mafdet ripped out the hearts of wrong-doers, delivering them personally to the pharaoh's feet, in a similar manner as domestic cats present people with rodents or birds that they have killed or maimed.

She was associated with (Feline mammal usually having thick soft fur and being unable to roar; domestic cats; wildcats) cats and (Agile grizzled Old World viverrine; preys on snakes and rodents) mongooses (both of which kill snakes) and was known to protect from the dangerous effects of snakebites.
Her name means “She Who Runs Swiftly.” Some of Mafdet’s titles were “Slayer of Serpents” and “Lady of the Castle of Life.” A very old deity, Mafdet was believed to represent the rule of law and final judgment; in fact, this goddess’ symbol was the executioner’s staff.
Mafdet was said to “rip out the hearts of the transgressors of the Laws of Ma'at and deliver them personally to Ra and the pharaoh’s feet." In the early New Kingdom she was depicted as ruling over the Judgment Hall.

Mafdet wears short, fingerless gloves of tough cat's eye green leather, and her shoes are platform flipflops with a 3" heel and green straps over the toes.
Mafdet points to a target, covers her eyes with both hands and says, "Twilight Flash." A flash, as of the sun or moon reflecting off a still body of water, is emitted from her eye-glasses (or her eyes, if she's not wearing the glasses).
Mafdet performs a random combination of punches and kicks (think about randomly pressing the buttons in a fighting game) for about a minute, then faces her target, looking at them calmly until she catches their eye, holding their gaze, and murmuring the spell words.

When Mafdet is described as leaping at the necks of snakes, the imagery seems to suggest her form takes on that of a mongoose.
In one epithet, Mafdet wears braided locks, probably a reference to her displaying the jointed bodies of the scorpions which she has killed.

Barbelith Underground > Temple > Honoring Bast
As I understand it Mafdet predates both Bast and Sekhmet historically - I've seen references to her as being either a cheetah or panther-headed goddess.
Yes, Mafdet was a very old goddess whose worship was more or less supplanted by Bast and Sekhmet, who absorbed many of her attributes.
Thus, even though Mafdet was identified with a panther, Bast with a cat, and Sekhmet with a lion, some consider them all to be aspects or versions of each other...
