  Maffei 1 Group
Its dominant member is the giant elliptical galaxy, Maffei 1, which, together with Maffei 2, was discovered on infrared plates in 1968 by the Italian astronomer Paolo Maffei (1926-).
Both galaxies lie near the galactic equator in Cassiopeia in the so-called zone of avoidance and are thus heavily obscured at visible wavelengths by dust and gas.
Maffei 2 is a medium-sized, average-brightness barred spiral galaxy (type SBc II) about 16 million light-years away, while the distance to Maffei 1 has been put at around 10 million light-years.

Maffei II and Maffei I were both discovered by Paolo Maffei in 1968 from their infrared emission.
Maffei II lies in the zone of avoidance and is heavily obscured by the Milky Way, so is barely detectable at optical wavelengths.
It has been suggested that Maffei II may be a member of the Local Group, but it is now thought to be a member of another nearby group, the Maffei Group.

Their plan was to use deep 0.8 mm CCD images to gauge the size and luminosity of Maffei 1, which in turn would yield a better estimate of its distance.
Maffei 1, however, has a galactic latitude of only -0.6d, and is so heavily obscured (5 magnitudes in V) that it wasn't even discovered until 1968 (by Paolo Maffei of the Laboratorio di Astrofisica).
We now know that there is a group of 13 galaxies in the same general area of the sky, dominated by Maffei 1 and the giant spiral IC 342.

Maffei had a new one-person exhibition in 1996, at Tomás Andreu’s gallery.3 Between solo shows, Maffei took part in several group exhibitions, both within Chile as well as abroad.4 He also distanced his work from that of Claudio Bravo.

Maffei - who had come to the firm from Microsoft in January 2000 amid much fanfare and expectations that he could give a relatively unknown Canadian company a new public identity - stood at the precipice of a grand failure.
If at that point Maffei had resigned, been forced out or left powerless in a debtor liquidation of 360networks' assets, his name would now be spoken in the same critical tone reserved for the many once-celebrated executives from big firms who took over much-hyped start-ups and quickly flamed out.
Maffei and company faced the challenge of coming up with a restructuring plan that could rapidly melt a $2.7 billion mountain of debt and lure new financing in the midst of a lingering telecom industry bust.

YORK AND ALABAMA ASTRONOMERS "SEE THE LIGHT" AFTER UNMASKING OBSCURED GALAXIES

The IC342-Maffei 1 group of galaxies was probably involved in a chain of events that affected our neighbourhood in the sky, McCall said, and therefore the group may have played a role in the history and movement of our galaxy, and, of course, our solar system.
In the past, research on this group has been inhibited by clouds of dust which both obscure and redden the light from the galaxies, and by tens of thousands of superimposed stars in the Milky Way interfering with measurements of the properties of the members.
They found that IC342, Maffei 1, and Maffei 2 are so bright that, if not for the dust obscuring them, they would be among the five brightest galaxies in the northern sky.

Almost none of these galaxies was effectively studied in the past because of the heavy foreground extinction and significant foreground star contamination in the direction of the group.
In the absence of galactic extinction, Maffei 1, Maffei 2, and IC 342 would be among the five brightest galaxies in the northern sky, and both Maffei 1 and IC 342 would subtent angles as large as the full Moon.
The results are critical for assessing the degree to which the group influenced the dynamical evolution of the Local Group.

The dim reddish glow from the central regions of Maffei 1, a large elliptical galaxy only about 5 megaparsecs way, is all that remains of the galaxy's light after traversing the clouds of our own galaxy.
Maffei 1 and the neighboring spiral Maffei 2 are so close that some workers, such as Gene Byrd and collaborators, have calculated that these galaxies' gravitational influence might have been significant in the early history of our own Local Group galaxies.
To the northeast of Maffei 1 is a small foreground reflection nebula, whose unusual greenish hue results from a combination of its blue intrinsic color and the reddening from intervening dust in the outer arms of the MIlky Way.

 The Local Group
Observations and calculations suggest that the group is highly dynamic and has changed significantly in the past: The galaxies around the large elliptical Maffei 1 have probably been once part of our galaxy group.
The next more distant galaxy groups, the NGC 4244 group and the CVn I Cloud (with M94 and M64) are probably too remote to have interacted significantly with the Local Group in the past.
It is of interest that of the subgroups of the Local Group mentioned above, the NGC 3109 group tends to the general direction of the Maffei 1 group and the M81 group, while the Local Group Cloud tends to the general direction of the Sculptor Group.
