Mafic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In geology, mafic minerals and rocks are silicate minerals, magmas, and volcanic and intrusive igneous rocks that have relatively high concentrations of the heavier elements.
Mafic minerals are usually dark in color and have a specific gravity greater than 3.
In terms of chemistry, mafic rocks are on the other side of the rock spectrum from the so-called felsic rocks.

Mafic is used for silicate minerals, magmas, and rocks which are relatively high in the heavier elements.
Mafic minerals are usually dark in color and have relatively high specific gravities (greater than 3.0).
Mafic magmas are usually produced at spreading centers, and represent material which is newly differentiated from the upper mantle.

MAFIC provides for dual porosity interaction using either quadrahedral finite elements or a 1-D approximation based on the Warren and Root pseudo-steady state approximation.
MAFIC was designed to simplify input data requirements while providing maximum flexibility for the designation of boundary conditions.
MAFIC is generally used for fracture networks of 10 to 10,000 fractures, although it and has been applied for networks of up to 100,000 fractures using triangular finite elements and 300,000 fractures using pipe elements.

Mafic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Mafic is a term used in geology for silicate minerals, magmas, and rocks which have relatively high concentrations of the heavier elements.
The term is a combination of "magnesium" and "ferric," the Latin word for iron, but mafic magmas also are rich in calcium and sodium.
Common rock-forming mafic minerals include olivine, pyroxene, amphibole, biotite and other micas, augite and the plagioclase feldspars.

Mafic layers are scarce and are typically no more than a few centimeters thick, but a thick mafic layer, up to a few meters in thickness, occurs in a plagioclase lherzolite layer.
In the Upper Zone, harzburgites are the dominant wallrocks of the mafic layers (Figs 3 and 4), typically forming a sequence: mafic layer-harzburgite-plagioclase lherzolite; whereas in the Lower Zone mafic layers generally occur within plagioclase lherzolite (Fig.

Cretaceous ages on several dated mafic dikes led to the uncomfortable fear that all mafic Independence dikes are Cretaceous, but several U-Pb ages near 148 Ma have recently been determined for mafic IDS dikes (Table 1; e.g., Coleman et al., 1994, 1998; R. Whitmarsh and J. Walker, unpublished).
The mafic rocks contain layering from <1 cm to >10 cm in thickness that is especially strong near the contact with granite at the highest point on the ridge.
Mafic dikes cut cm- to meter-scale mylonite zones in the plutons and themselves are deformed by 1 - >10 meter-wide NNE-striking reverse-sense shear zones with a varying sinistral strike-slip component.

THE GUNBARREL MAFIC MAGMATIC EVENT: A KEY 780 MA TIME MARKER FOR RODINIA PLATE RECONSTRUCTIONS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Pb dates from the eight mafic dikes and sheets are statistically indistinguishable and we have combined sixteen individual baddeleyite analyses to yield a composite U-Pb Concordia age of 780.3 ± 1.4 Ma (95% confidence level).
Other mafic rocks that may be part of the gunbarrel event include some of the voluminous mafic sills that intrude the Belt/Purcell Supergroups in the U.S. and Canada and the northwest-trending dike at Mount Moran in the Teton Mountains of Wyoming.
The origin of the mafic magmatism of the Gunbarrel event is not clear, but it may be related to mantle plume activity or the upwelling of asthenosphere leading to crustal extension accompanying initial breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia and development of the proto-Pacific Ocean.

Mineralogical data indicate that thermal equilibrium occurred between the more mafic magma and the felsic matrix.
The main hybridization mechanism involved is believed to be chemical diffusion resulting from compositional gradients, possibly combined with the migration of fluids.

 MYRMEKITE 51 OF 51
The mafic magma crystallized as a fine-grained mafic tonalite containing more than 30 volume percent biotite, and locally, the felsic magma crystallized as coarse-grained felsic tonalite in small, agmatitic patches and veins in the mafic tonalite.
This K was then precipitated as K-feldspar (microcline) that replaced deformed plagioclase crystals, (a) in xenocrysts in the mafic tonalite, (b) in patches of coarse-grained felsic tonalite in agmatite, and (c) in the larger mass of coarse-grained felsic tonalite that enclosed the large enclaves.
In this process, (1) the quartz reacted with the mafic magma to produce amphibole rims, and (2) rims of the sodic plagioclase xenocrysts underwent Ca-metasomatism to form tiny amphibole crystals and aggregates of myrmekite grains with tiny quartz vermicules.

Mafic and Ultramafic rocks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
When we talk about ultramafic/mafic rocks we're really talking about ophiolites - sections of the seafloor which were produced at spreading centers and then shoved up onto the continental margin (instead of being subducted like they're supposed to).
This is actually a pretty rare occurrence, and would lead us to believe that mafic and ultramafic rocks should be fairly uncommon.
It is clear that most of what we lump together as ophiolites is actually the "mafic" portion (basalt, diabasic dikes, and gabbro), with a much smaller percentage consisting of the upper mantle ultramafic units.

Once subjected to orogenesis, collapsed mafic-silicic layered intrusions (MASLI) and mafic intrusions with primary vertical layering are respectively difficult to distinguish from syn-tectonic mafic-felsic sheet intrusions emplaced in steep deformation zones and from folded or tilted horizontally-layered intrusions.
Their distinction is critical to the understanding of mafic magmatism in the Grenville Province and to the development of sound geological models to support mineral exploration.
