The tribal community inhabits the lands which were traditionally inhabited by its ancestors, the nomadic Tungus of the second Dolgan clan, north of the formerly inhabited point Siglan, in the Olskiy District of the province of Magadan, on the northern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk.
The northern seas surrounding Magadan are situated on the continental shelf and are not particularly deep.
Magadan fishermen claim that the chum salmon is caught in the rivers by spinning, but it can also be fished with an artificial fly, only on the bottom of the river.

 Endangered Languages of Siberia - The Even Language
The main name of the language is Even language (obsolete name – Lamut language which was introduced into practical use in the 1930s and was used by the authorities as one of authentic and reasonable names of languages which served to substitute traditional ethnic and language names in those years).
In the west of Magadanskaya Province and in the north of Yakutia Even-Yukagir language contacts are taking place also reflected in the presence of Yukagir loans in Even language, with Even having a rather serious impact on Yukagir language, especially among Nizhnekolymskie Yukagir.
Literature in Even language is available in Magadan provincial library by A.S. Pushkin, in Magadan regional studies museum, as well as in National library of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

The Magadan city court delivered a decision refusing to satisfy the petition of the procurator of Magadan province for the liquidation of the "Word of Life: church, finding the request to be judicially without foundation.
The procurator of Magadan province submitted a representation for liquidation of the Word of Life church on 10 June 1998, but on 28 August, after first hearing, the case was postponed indefinitely since the procurator turned out to be unprepared to prove his claims.
Father Boguslaw Steczek, adviser to the Jesuit superior of the Slavonic province, said that the Jesuits were the first victims of the new law, because they were the first to present their application to the authorities of the Ministry of Justice.

 Kaiettyn: A Village in Bilibinskii District
Kaiettyn, named after the river along which it is situated, does not officially qualify as a village in Chukotka, and so you won't find it on a map.
You will be able to find the villages of Omolon (on Chukotka's southwest border with Magadan Province) and Chuvanskoe (north of Chukotka's border with Kamchatka Province), and Kaiettyn lies about midway between the two, near the Oloi River.
Kaiettyn used to be nothing more than a distribution point, a base serving the reindeer brigades that moved about in the surrounding territory.

NITs "Chukotka" is a research institute located in Anadyr', the capital city of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (NITs is pronounced "Neets" -- it stands for Nauchno-Issledovatel'skii Tsentr, Scientific Research Center, which is an old name that persists in current usage).
Up until 1992, it was just an outpost of the research institute in Magadan, but when Chukotka gained its independence from Magadan Province that year, the outpost became a full-fledged independent institute.
Hard economic times have caused another reorganization, however, and as of 1998, NITs has been once again subsumed under the Magadan institute.

Governor Valentin Tsvetkov was killed on October 18, 2002, in what is clearly seen by Russian police and his colleagues as a contract hit.
The 54-year-old official was accompanied by his wife, an aide, and a bodyguard when he was killed, but no one else was injured in the attack.
